Margaret Joy Todd, 85, tragically died after the incident which took place in the town earlier this year.
A man has been arrested and charged after an elderly woman died in a crash in Dumfries and Galloway earlier this year. Margaret Joy Todd, known as Joy, died following the incident which took place in Stranraer on January 3.
The incident happened when the 85-year-old was walking along Sheuchan Street near the junction with Park Lane in the town at around 10.20am. The incident involved a white Vauxhall Vivaro van. No one else was injured.
Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service, raced to the crash site. Joy was rushed to hospital where she later passed away.
A 22-year-old man has now been arrested and charged in connection with a road traffic offence following the fatal crash. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
The road was closed for nearly 10 hours for crash investigation work and reopened around 7.15pm later that day. Tributes soon poured in for Joy, who was described as a “wonderful woman,” after the tragic news was shared by cops.
One local wrote: “My thoughts are with Joy’s family,” while a second penned: “Such a wonderful woman”.
A third chimed in: “God bless,” while a fourth commented: “So sad, thoughts with the family and friends”.
A fifth scribed: “So, so sad. RIP,” while a sixth wrote: “Sad,” and another added: “Tragic”.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a road traffic offence following a fatal crash in Dumfries and Galloway,
“The incident happened around 10.20am on Saturday, 3 January, 2026, in Sheuchan Street near the junction with Park Lane in Stranraer and involved a pedestrian and a white Vauxhall Vivaro van.
“Emergency services attended and 85-year-old Margaret Joy Todd, was taken to hospital where she later died. No one else was injured. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
