Meet Maggie – the longest resident at Darlington Dogs Trust
This lovely Lurcher, named Maggie, came into their care in 2021 after an unsettled six-months start to life. She has since spent more than four years – 1,638 days to be exact – with them.
The team at Darlington Dogs Trust said they are eager to find Maggie her forever home this year.

During her time at the centre, she has made amazing progress with her training and would continue to thrive with a family that can continue her training and give her plenty of time and attention.
Maggie is an energetic, playful girl, but she finds making friends a bit worrying. In time, however, her affectionate side will shine through as she spends time with her favourite people.

When Maggie isn’t showcasing her training skills or playing with her toys, she likes to relax on the grass and soak up the rays – so, she would love a home with a garden.
She would like to live with adults only and in a home where she is the only dog, ideally also near to walking routes and less dog-populated areas.

Michelle Graham, behaviour officer at Dogs Trust Darlington, who works closely with Maggie, said: “She is a bubbly, high-spirited girl whose enthusiasm is downright contagious.
“Nothing delights her more than a game of fetch – her tail wagging furiously as she runs after her beloved tennis balls, returning them again and again with bright eyes and boundless energy, always ready for just one more throw.”

Maggie celebrated her fifth birthday in the centre just last week , having never experienced a birthday or Christmas outside of the kennels.
She enjoyed a party to remember with many of the team, where she was spoiled with presents, treats and an abundance of snuggles.
However, they said that the day was tinged with sadness as Maggie is still waiting for her birthday wish to be fulfilled – to find a loving home.

Nikki Holroyd, manager at Dogs Trust Darlington, said: “Maggie is a very sweet girl with a loving and fun nature. She can be a worrier, but our training team has worked wonders with Maggie, and great things have been achieved.
“We know that Maggie will make a wonderful addition to a family, as we have seen similar Lurchers flourish when they meet their perfect match.
“To anyone looking for a loyal and loving best pal who will be on your side, and by your side through thick and thin, we would ask them to consider our black beauty Maggie.”
