Middleham Bridge closed after HGV strike hours before Tour of Britain

The Grade II-listed Middleham Bridge, in Wensleydale, was struck by an HGV yesterday evening (Thursday, September 3), causing significant damage to its decorative masonry arches.

North Yorkshire Council initially hoped temporary work could make the structure safe and allow the road to reopen.

However, following a further assessment today engineers have concluded the damaged arch is too unstable for temporary repairs.

Large sections of stonework have been lost, while the impact has also displaced part of the arch, creating what the council described as a “significant structural risk”.

As a result, the bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a repair plan is developed.

North Yorkshire Council leader Councillor Carl Les said: “The damaged arch has not only lost sections of stonework, but has also become displaced creating a significant structural risk.

“Because of this, the listed bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a plan for repairs is developed.

“Concrete barriers and fencing have been installed to secure the site and prevent access to the bridge to ensure the safety of all road users and pedestrians.”

Cllr Les thanked residents and motorists for their patience and said further updates would be issued as repair plans progressed.
