A 26-year-old healthcare worker said she tried to help a man who was lying on the ground with “lots of blood around him”.

She said members of the public were assisting the man before officers arrived and took over.

She added that there was a large emergency services response, including armed police at one stage.

The woman said she had initially believed the gunshots were the sound of a car backfiring.

Det Ch Supt Emma Bond, central south borough commander, said: “We understand that this incident will cause concern within the local community, and an increased police presence will remain in the area throughout the day as our inquiries continue.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss.”

Police are asking anyone with any information that could help the investigation to come forward.
