New Stockton scam warning issued as Argos and Vinted users affected
The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit Network has raised concerns about fraudsters accessing Argos accounts using login details from data breaches.
Vinted users are being targeted by scam emails claiming their accounts have been suspended, urging them to provide login information.
Fake GOV.UK messages are circulating, demanding car tax payments and directing victims to phishing websites.
Homeowners with solar panels are being contacted by criminals posing as warranty providers, asking for payments to transfer or maintain warranties.
There have also been incidents of impersonation and courier fraud across the North East, including parts of Stockton.
Fraudsters are reportedly convincing victims they have overpaid on mortgages, that bank staff are investigating counterfeit currency.
They are also attempting to convince victims that money must be moved to a “safe account” or handed to a courier.
Police have urged residents to be cautious of communications from unknown sources.
It is also important that you never share personal or banking information with unsolicited callers.
Fraud can be reported at www.reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
