Winter can be a challenging time for many, with shorter days, darker nights, colder weather and seasonal pressures all contributing to increased stress, isolation, anxiety and low mood. The new Wintering Well content has been developed specifically in response to these challenges, offering timely, practical support that people can access easily.

The new section provides clear, straightforward advice on how to support mental wellbeing through winter, including tips on staying connected, creating helpful routines and building small, achievable habits to maintain wellbeing. It also signposts people to further advice and support if they feel they need extra help.

Dr Simon Stuart, consultant clinical psychologist and digital lead for psychological services at NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We know that winter brings its own pressures. Its dark, its cold and can sometimes feel miserable. That’s why we’ve introduced the new Wintering Well section on our Lanarkshire Mind Matters website this winter.

“It’s designed to be a simple starting point for anyone who wants to take care of their mental health at this time of year. The guide offers practical, manageable tips – things like staying connected, finding routines that work for you, and taking small steps to stay well.

“It’s not about making big or perfect changes. It’s about finding steps that fit into your life. And if things feel more difficult, the site also links to further sources of advice and support, so people know where to turn.”

The resource forms part of NHS Lanarkshire’s wider commitment to ensuring the right care is available, close to home, for mental wellbeing throughout the winter period.
