The two pilots of an Amazon cargo jet when it ran off the runway at Miami International Airport have been pictured for the first time. 

Joseph Carroll, 55, and Jaime Filipe Silva Molina, 37, were at the helm of the Boeing 767 when it barreled off the tarmac and killed five people on Sunday. 

According to the Miami Herald, the two have since been released from hospital after the aircraft crashed while trying to land. 

It comes after the five victims were identified as Rolando Aleman, 55, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53, Julio C Pineda, 75, Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53, and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47.

The aircraft slammed into a van then through a fence, and then onto a local street where it destroyed an SUV.

The five were all in a van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a contract cleaning company for airline companies, NBC News reported.

‘Our employees are far more than the people who work beside us each day; they are family, and they are deeply loved,’ the firm said in a statement. 

‘Our hearts and prayers are with every employee and every family whose lives have been forever changed. We grieve with those who lost a loved one and pray for the healing and recovery of those who were injured.’ 

Jaime Filipe Silva Molina was the other pilot. Officials said he and Carroll were both released from hospital following the events of Sunday

Three other people are still hospitalized, sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said. Eugenio Corredor, 79, and Ridoel Averhoff Diaz, 32, are in critical condition. Roosevelt Sebastian Perdomo Torres, 36, is in stable condition.

Two of the men were passengers in the van, and the third was injured on the ground, authorities said. 

Witness Abraham Altamar told CBS News that one of the pilots approached him after the crash and said ‘my career is over.’

The Amazon cargo jet slammed into a 2012 Ford van before it skidded across the ground and hit another car, Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said on Monday.

Homendy said seven people working for a contract airline cleaning company were inside the van. It is unclear how many were in the other car. 

The plane was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico – the aircraft’s third trip of the day, according to Homendy.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but a preliminary report by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) found that the airport is not equipped with the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) that has been installed at more than 120 airports nationwide.

The system places beds of lightweight, crushable material at the end of a runway to help bring planes that overshoot the tarmac safely to a stop, the agency said.

Homendy said the plane overshot the runway, making it about 1,300ft past the paved surface.

Terrifying dispatch audio obtained by the Daily Mail revealed the horrific moment rescuers counted the dead after the crash.

‘This aircraft overran the runway and crossed 67th Avenue. It struck a truck,’ one emergency responder said, according to the audio.

‘We do have a patient on the ground. We’re looking at surveilling the area for more patients.’

Two RNLI lifeboats carrying 140 Channel migrants were denied entry to two larger ports before docking near Portsmouth, where they were met by hundreds of masked protesters. 

Police officers were injured and vehicles damaged during a stand-off with more than 500 balaclava-clad men after the asylum seekers were brought ashore at Eastney Landing on Sunday.

The leader of Portsmouth City Council has heavily criticised the decision, claiming it had ‘put lives at risk’ and caused ‘needless disruption’.

It has now emerged that two RNLI crews were barred from docking at Southampton Port and Portsmouth Harbour, with governing bodies threatening legal action if they did so. 

A broadcast on an open marine VHF radio revealed that Southampton Vessel Traffic Service and King’s Harbour Master Portsmouth denied the RNLI permission to enter either port or their approaches and failure to comply could result in criminal prosecution.

The crews of the Bembridge and Yarmouth lifeboats therefore decided to sail several miles further along the coast and dock instead at Eastney, where the confrontation later unfolded.

Large crowds blocked traffic along the road leading away from the port in an attempt to stop the migrants reaching a processing centre in Kent. Police were seen carrying riot shields as they confronted the black-clad mob.

Hampshire Police Federation claimed two officers were pushed off motorbikes, while others had bricks thrown at them. 

The chaos came a day after masked anti-migrant protesters blocked traffic at the Port of Dover.

The landing sparked protests which saw demonstrators clash with riot police until they were dispersed in the early hours of Monday 

Hard-Right organisation Patriot Platform – run by convicted attempted kidnapper Daniel Thomas – claimed responsibility for the demonstrations in Portsmouth and Dover. 

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called for a ban on face coverings worn by extremists on both the Left and Right, describing them as a ‘menace’ designed to bully and intimidate. He insisted the ban should include all full-face coverings, including burkas.

Associated British Ports (ABP) confirmed that the RNLI lifeboats carrying the migrants were told not to come to Southampton on Sunday night.

‘ABP did receive an enquiry about landing recovered migrants at the Port of Southampton,’ a spokesman said. ‘We had to decline the enquiry as the port did not have suitable reception facilities available.

‘If there had been a safety-of-life-at-sea issue where Southampton was the closest port, or if we had received a formal direction from the authorities, then we would have played a role. Neither was the case in this situation.’

The King’s Harbour Master Portsmouth has been approached for comment.

The migrant ‘mega-dinghy’ had travelled about 70 miles from the Normandy coast, becoming the first migrant boat known to have completed such a lengthy crossing. Its route was far removed from the usual transit point between Calais and Dover.

The decision to land the migrants in Portsmouth has sparked a major row, with Portsmouth City Council leader Steve Pitt accusing the Home Office of ‘poor judgment’.

He said: ‘The Government needs to take more action to prevent small boat crossings. Clearly people are not happy with the situation and we respect everyone’s right to protest, but it should be done peacefully and within the law.

‘We are pleased the coaches were eventually able to leave Portsmouth early this morning to take people outside Hampshire for processing in the normal way.

‘The council wasn’t asked about the decision to land the lifeboats in Portsmouth. This was entirely a decision taken by UK Border Force, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Home Office.

‘It was a completely unsuitable location to bring the boats ashore. This entire situation was avoidable and has brought needless disruption to our city. I would like to thank the emergency services for their professionalism under very challenging circumstances.

‘However, the Home Office has some serious questions to answer about its lack of planning, inconsistent decision-making and, ultimately, poor judgment. It put people at risk. This cannot happen again.’

There are now fears more dinghies will make the long-distance sea voyage from Normandy as smugglers evolve their tactics.

A senior French interior ministry source told the Daily Mail: ‘The geographical focus of the people smugglers is definitely changing.

‘They are finding it much harder to get boats launched in the Pas-de-Calais and so are moving west to Normandy.

‘We expect far more of the mega-dinghies to appear here in the coming weeks and months. The success on Sunday proved the voyage can be done.’

The Home Office confirmed 625 migrants reached Britain on Sunday, the highest daily total since July 29.

A further, as-yet-unconfirmed number, thought to be about 130, arrived in the early hours of Monday.

The 46ft mega-dinghy left an isolated beach near Jobourg, Normandy, in the ‘very early hours’ of Sunday morning, a senior search-and-rescue official said.

‘Jobourg is not patrolled by police because nobody would expect a boat to leave from such an isolated, rocky spot,’ the source said.

‘Within an hour or so, the boat was in serious difficulty and passengers on board made Mayday calls on their mobile phones.’

Its outboard motor failed, leaving the dinghy drifting dangerously 14 miles off the French coast.

‘We asked them who wanted to be rescued, and the answer was no one,’ said the source.

‘Only a few migrants were wearing life jackets, so we handed out jackets to all of them. It seemed incomprehensible that they were risking their lives without life jackets.

‘A second outboard motor was made to work, allowing the boat to continue its voyage to Britain.’

Five French rescue boats and two helicopters were involved in an operation that monitored and supported the dinghy’s 14-hour crossing.

A spokesman for the Maritime Prefecture for the English Channel and the North Sea said migrants were not transferred to rescue vessels due to concerns over the ‘structural fragility’ of their dinghy.

The crossing was later monitored by British authorities, including a Coastguard aircraft and RNLI lifeboats, before the vessel was escorted into Eastney Marina, three miles from Portsmouth’s main harbour.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We condemn the intimidating and thuggish behaviour we saw in Portsmouth last night.

‘The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy, but it must never cross the line into disorder. We thank the emergency services who safely managed this situation.

‘This Government is doing the hard and necessary work of bearing down on small boat crossings, with the lowest number of arrivals between June and August since 2020.’

The RNLI helped more than 36,000 people across its lifeboat and lifeguard services last year, with crews launching more than 9,000 times to assist those in distress at sea.

RNLI lifeboat crews insist they have a duty to rescue anyone at sea, regardless of who they are.

Nicolas Cage‘s Malibu mansion has been rocked by a massive sinkhole that has swallowed the beachfront home’s driveway.

Photos of the destruction show the once-palatial property sitting on the edge of a massive crater that has taken down the driveway, a portion of the adjacent street and a portable restroom. 

The luxurious residence, which Cage purchased for $10.5 million in 2024, has now been sectioned off with various orange construction cones. 

Workers could also be assessing the situation inside the sinkhole and along the street.  

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Cage, 62, and has not yet heard back.

Firefighters discovered the collapsed driveway early Tuesday morning after responding to a suspected gas main break, a public information officer told KTLA.

The hole, which is believed to be around 30 feet by 30 feet wide, was reportedly the result of coastal erosion. 

No one has been ordered to evacuate and the gas company has been on site fixing the main.

Notably, the damage occurred as high surf continues battering the Southern California coast following the development of former Hurricane Marie, the website adds. 

KTLA reporter Rich Prickett, who was reporting on the incident from the air, said no one appeared to be inside the home at the time. 

‘Substantial damage done to this home, or at least the driveway to this home here in Malibu,’ he said.

‘It doesn’t appear that anybody was home. As a matter of fact, the house looks like it is under some sort of renovation.’ 

No one has been reported to have been injured, according to KTLA. 

Located in a highly desirable oceanfront setting, the home contains a rooftop deck with jacuzzi, soaring glass walls, multiple bedrooms, and was the previous owners ‘happy place’.

The home was built in the 1990s by the late Jose Liberman, co-founder of the Liberman Broadcasting, and remained in his family until it was sold to Cage.

‘Yes, Nicolas Cage bought our home in Malibu,’ Lenard Liberman, Jose’s son and Liberman Broadcasting co-founder, told The New York Times in 2024.

‘My parents would go on weekends and it was my father’s “happy place”, he explained.

‘My father passed away and my mom just couldn’t go to the house anymore. Too many memories,’ he added.

The residence contains access to an isolated beach, chef’s kitchen, and garage with elevator access.

Born Nicolas Kim Coppola, Cage is the son of the late American academic and author August Coppola as well as the nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and his actress sister Talia Shire. 

The family includes Cage’s cousins, filmmaker Sofia Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman. 

His grandparents were composer Carmine Coppola – who scored many of Francis’s films – and Italia Coppola, who also appeared in her son’s Godfather films.

Two senators have urged President Donald Trump to rethink his threat to ban aircraft sales by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier in the United States.

“NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!” Trump wrote in a social media post Monday. “If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank.’”

The dispute follows the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations on Aug. 21, which led Trump and his administration to launch a series of tariffs and aggressive public statements directed at Canada. Ottawa retaliated Tuesday by introducing tit-for-tat tariffs targeting approximately $20 billion in American imports.

Responding to Trump’s remarks about Bombardier, the private jet maker pointed out that key components for its aircraft, including wings and engines, are already manufactured in the U.S. and emphasized its heavy reliance on an American supply network.

Bombardier said that the U.S. aerospace sector remains a “clear winner on trade and exports” and the company highlighted that it supports tens of thousands of jobs directly and through its broad supplier network.

Bombardier is one of Canada’s most historic manufacturers. Established by Quebec inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier in the 1930s as a snowmobile maker, the company expanded into rail car manufacturing and commercial aviation over the decades before restructuring to focus exclusively on business jets.

Its current supply chain involves roughly 2,800 U.S. businesses across 47 states. Wings for its business aircraft are manufactured in Texas, while flight control systems are built near Los Angeles. Additionally, Honeywell produces engines for Bombardier’s Challenger jets in Phoenix, and Iowa-based Collins Aerospace manufactures avionics and communication systems in Cedar Rapids.

“Bombardier values its great partnership with American companies and its U.S. employees. Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers, and the communities in which we operate across the country,” the company said.

The threat has sparked concern in Kansas, a Republican stronghold that has held both U.S. Senate seats for a century and voted for Trump by roughly 16 percentage points in 2024. Both of the state’s senators confirmed they contacted the White House to address the potential economic fallout for local workers.

“I reached out to the Trump administration to make certain the President is aware of the significant contributions of Bombardier to Kansas and the importance of its presence in Wichita to many Kansas workers at Bombardier and in the Bombardier supply chain,” Sen. Jerry Moran wrote in a social media post, adding that he would work to maintain the manufacturer’s presence in the state.

Sen. Roger Marshall voiced the same support in a social media post Tuesday, saying “I’m going to fight to keep Bombardier’s over 1,200 Kansas jobs. I’ve already taken that concern inside the Oval Office.”

The trade friction comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans earlier this year to acquire six airborne early-warning radar aircraft built by Sweden’s Saab in partnership with Bombardier, bypassing American defense contractors. The Saab system utilizes Bombardier’s Global 6500 aircraft platform and contains 20% U.S.-made components. Canada selected the platform over Boeing’s E-7A Wedgetail and L3Harris’s Aeris X.

Canada is also reviewing its planned purchase of U.S. F-35 fighter jets, while Saab has pitched building its Gripen fighter jet locally within Canada.

On May 15, rail minister Lord Hendy was brought up to Darlington to officially open the ultra-modern extension, but four months later, the approaches are still an eyesore with no completion date until next spring.

With ugly red emergency fencing drawing every visitor’s attention to the crash barriers and the weeds, it does not create the impression that the town, which is trying to position itself as the No 11 of the north, is vibrant and on top of things.

Indeed, the Bank Top station extension was initially planned to be open in time for the railway bicentenary in September 2025, but, as delays are expected for anything to do with British trains, that was pushed back to December 2025 and then to spring 2026 and now it seems the chaos is to continue until spring 2027.

There are already misgivings in the town about the development – the new long platforms are brutally exposed in bad weather while the old, atmospheric and covered station feels underused – and the eyesore that now greets people is not winning over any hearts.

There is bickering between the combined authority and the council over who is to blame for the delays but you would have thought that an adequate drainage system should have been planned a lot earlier in the process.

Those waiting in traffic queues cannot do much to hurry up the process but they can marvel at how even in the birthplace of the railways we cannot complete a station project on time and on budget while keeping local people on track.

​Plans to transform Scarborough’s historic West Pier and ensure it remains a working harbour and a popular visitor destination are set to require additional funding due to an “increase in costs”.

​​At a meeting in May, councillors said the scheme is expected to cost around £15 million, of which £1.7 million had been spent so far.

​​After decades of exposure to harsh marine conditions, many of the historic West Pier’s buildings are in a dilapidated state and North Yorkshire Council is working on a multi-million-pound regeneration scheme to revitalise the landmark structure.

​According to council documents, the additional expenditure is expected to be less than £1 million but exact costs are yet to be announced.

​“This report is to seek additional funding to cover the increase in cost since the decision by the former Scarborough Borough Council to proceed with the development,” a council notice states.

​A decision on the additional funding is due to be made later this winter.

​A meeting of the authority’s executive committee has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, to discuss the additional funding requirement.

​​The project includes restoring and repairing existing heritage facilities to bring them back into active use, preserving their character, alongside the creation of new, modern, flood-resilient buildings for commercial use and improved public facilities such as toilets and parking.

​Plans also include new business opportunities to support the local economy, new kiosks, enhanced pedestrian routes and a new paved plaza which could accommodate outdoor events and cultural activities.

​​At a meeting in January 2025, a decision on plans to redevelop the West Pier was deferred after questions were raised about the scheme’s economic benefits and the importance of adding a boat hoist.

​​Robin Gray, chairman of the Scarborough Harbour Advisory Board, has said that a long-discussed boat lift and marina expansion project in the town could generate more than £1.4 million annually and help create hundreds of additional berths.​

​The claim emerged during a recent meeting of the Scarborough Harbour Users Group, where members discussed future development plans and North Yorkshire Council’s wider harbour strategy.

​​Mr Gray told attendees he had developed a Green Book-standard business case setting out the potential economic benefits of a boat lift and associated marine facilities.

​Speaking at the meeting, he said the proposals could generate more than £1.4 million a year through a combination of berthing income and supporting businesses such as engineering and chandlery services.

The document also reportedly suggests the harbour could accommodate about 240 berths in the outer harbour.

​The proposals form part of wider discussions around the long-term “Blue Sky” vision for Scarborough Harbour, which council officers confirmed has now been incorporated into North Yorkshire Council’s adopted Harbours Strategy.

​​Chris Bourne, North Yorkshire Council’s head of harbours, said a £200,000 funding bid had been submitted to the Government’s Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund to support a feasibility study into the wider harbour expansion proposals.

​He said the study would be used to establish accurate costs and benefits for any development.
