Northumbria Water issue update on burst water main

Northumbrian Water said crews had worked through the morning after the burst near Askew Road. The main has been isolated and teams are clearing floodwater with Gateshead Council.

The company warned that heavy flooding and debris pulled from the bank were making the clean-up difficult.

As a result, Askew Road remains closed in both directions between Gateshead Centre and the Redheugh Bridge.

Northumbrian Water hopes to reopen the northbound lane within hours and will provide further updates as work continues.

Village Heights also remains closed as Northumbrian Water works with Gateshead Council and Northumbria Police.

The disruption comes as the Great North Run takes place, with heavy traffic expected across the area.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: “The water main has now been isolated, and the clean-up of the flooding is underway with Gateshead Council.

“Due to the flooding caused by the burst, and the amount of debris pulled from the bank, this is a difficult operation.

“We are hoping to be able to re-open the northbound lane of the road within the next few hours, but will continue to provide updates.”

Motorists should plan ahead, allow extra time and avoid the area where possible.

Northumbrian Water apologised for the disruption and thanked residents and road users for their patience as repairs and the clean-up continue.
