Paddy McGuinness reveals correct way to say Greenhalgh’s
Bolton certainly has its fair share of names which those not from the borough often struggle to pronounce: Daubhill, The Haulgh, and, seemingly for many, the name of one of the town’s most famous bakeries.
TV personality and proud Boltonian, Paddy McGuinness recently took the bit between his teeth and explained to his 2.2 million followers exactly how Greenhalgh’s should be said — much to the delight of fellow famous Boltonians.
It is not “Green-halves” or “Gre-nals”.

He explained how the name is pronounced after a huge shop from the bakery.
Paddy said: “Stocked up today, and for anyone visiting Bolton it is Green-halgh-s not Green-halls.
“You’re welcome.”

He named checked Vernon Kay and Shaun Keaveny in his Instagram post.
Vernon was quick to respond with “Bang on pal!!”
Shaun added: “FINALLY SOMEONE IS SAYING THIS!! Yes Paddy, it’s counter-intuitive, like Eoin or WED NES DAY but it’s GREEN-ALL-CHIZ.
“We dunno why but the “French pasty” is a banger x”
One posted in response: “I’m from Bolton and I agree with you, but living and working over the border in Wigan now and they all pronounce it wrong and have the audacity to say I’m saying it wrong.”
Greenhalgh’s Craft Bakery was founded in 1957 and is one of the largest employers in the Bolton area.
