Emergency crews were scrambled to Grange Tower on Thursday night.
Police have issued an update in the wake of a fatal fire at a tower block in Motherwell. A man died falling from a window of Grange Tower on Shields Drive on Thursday, March 5.
Emergency services raced to the scene at 10.20pm, with fire crews working to extinguish the huge blaze. As smoke billowed into the sky and flames leapt from a high-rise window, tragedy struck.
Locals reported seeing a man falling from a window of the flats. He was pronounced dead at the scene and police have said a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Cops investigating the incident have confirmed to the Record that the fire was not wilful. No other injuries were reported.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire within a property on Shields Drive in Motherwell around 10.20pm on Thursday, March 5.
“Emergency services attended and a man was seen to have fallen from the window of a property. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and no-one else was injured. The fire is not being treated as wilful and a report on the death will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Harrowing images captured the aftermath of the blaze. Forensics officers were seen scouring the scene as the investigation got underway.
A window frame at the tower block appeared to have warped and melted as a result of the blaze, with black marks all around the frame.
