Everything we know after a cordon was put in place in Piccadilly Gardens on Thursday afternoon:

  • A police scene was set up at Piccadilly Gardens bus station in Manchester this afternoon. A police officer was injured while detaining a suspect at around 4.40pm today (August 6).
  • Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed an arrest following the incident. A man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and remains in custody.
  • GMP said the injured officer’s condition is not life-threatening. The force described the injury as occurring whilst detaining a suspect in the city centre.
  • Numerous GMP vehicles were seen at the scene and a large cordon was put in place. The incident caused disruption around the bus station area.
  • Some people waiting for buses at Piccadilly Gardens were reportedly directed to Chorlton Street instead. This was due to the cordon and ongoing police activity.
  • By around 5.30pm, the scene had concluded. The cordon was removed and the police presence was no longer in place.
