Poll is new low for Labour as huge chunk say Starmer doesn’t respect Wales

The recent poll also showed that 21% of Welsh Labour voters said they would never vote for the party again

A new poll projects that less than 40% of 2024 Labour voters in Wales plan to stay loyal to the party at the Senedd elections this May, with many indicating they have no intention of returning to the in-power party.

The poll, carried out by More in Common, also states that only 17% of people in Wales believe Keir Starmer respects Wales, as the Prime Minister is seen as being largely disconnected from Welsh concerns.

The poll projects that while 38% of 2024 Labour voters will remain loyal to the party, 20% will switch to Plaid Cymru, 15% remain undecided on their vote, and 8% would be voting for the Greens. For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here.

Of those Welsh Labour voters defecting from the party, polling projects that 45% said it would have to be at least over 10 years for Labour to regain their support, with one quarter saying they will never vote for the party again. Only 21% said they would consider voting for the party again within the next four years.

When asked how much respect various party leaders have for the people of Wales, Rhun ap Iorweth performed the best, closely followed by current First Minister Eluned Morgan.

At the opposite end, 39% of respondents thought Sir Keir had no respect for the people of Wales. The Prime Minister ranked at the bottom of the table, similarly to Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage.

33% of those responding to the poll thought the Reform leader had no respect for the people of Wales but 28% believed he had at least a fair amount of respect.

The poll indicates that Mr ap Iorwerth has the highest approval rating among Welsh voters, with 18% saying he is doing a good job, while 22% say he is performing badly. On the other hand, 66% said Sir Keir was doing a bad job.

Mr Farage came out slightly higher than the First Minister, with 14% saying Ms Morgan is performing well to Mr Farage’s 29%.

The results of the poll are based on a nationally representative survey of 815 respondents carried out from November 25, 2025, to January 5, 2026.
