Sam Smith said ‘I think this is one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten’
Sam Smith has heaped massive praise on a street food van in Greater Manchester after they proclaimed it to be the ‘best thing ever’.
The singer-songwriter, known for hits including Stay With Me and Promises, was in the city at the start of the month for two intimate shows at the Albert Hall to coincide with the release of their fifth album Hazel Eyes. It was their first show in the city since their 2023 gig was forced to be cancelled mid-show.
During their visit to Manchester, they had taken the time out to visit a number of local food spots as part of their social media page Samserved, which sees them rate and sample the cuisine during stops on their tour.

Sam had previously shared appreciation for the beloved Northern Quarter family-run café This & That, which is claimed to be home of ‘rice and three’ in the city centre. At the time, Sam said their meal was ‘everything food should be about’.
But Sam has not stopped there and has now posted a full video review from their time visiting The Spud Club, which is a jacket potato van in the New Bailey neighbourhood, in Salford, which is situated near Salford Central station and Spinningfields.
Set within the shadows of the People’s History Museum, the street food van – open every Thursday lunchtime – serves a range of loaded jacket potatoes, including flavours like chilli con carne, chicken tikka masala, and tuna mayo.
Opting for the chicken curry option for their review, Sam – who proclaimed Manchester was one of their ‘favourite places in the UK’ – said the food choice took them back to their childhood when they would eat jacket potatoes with their dad in the market square of their hometown of Cambridge.
Tucking into the food, which they compared to a chicken Katsu curry, Sam said: “I wasn’t going to eat the whole thing but I’m going to have to eat the whole thing. This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Championing the cheese and the flavours of the topping, as well as the skin of the potato, Sam added: “I think this is one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten on Sam Served, I swear. It’s up there for me.”
Continuing the praise, they went on to say in the Instagram video: “Honestly, if you’re from Manchester, you need to line up outside this, you’ve got to keep these places alive please.”
They finished their video review with a slow clap, applauding the Spud Club for its cheese and the flavours of the topping, as well as the skin of the potato.
They concluded: “That was, by far, the most incredible jacket potato I’ve ever had in my life – the mixture of chip shop curry sauce with a potato, with the cheese, the way that these incredible people have prepared the potato was utter perfection.”
Located on the banks of the River Irwell, the New Bailey development is a mixed-use regeneration scheme featuring offices, apartments and retail units. Alongside The Spud Club, it also home to the likes of Pan-Asian restaurant Shiruku and The Ainscow boutique hotel.
