Seven people, including two police, dead in A66 South Bank crash
The crash occurred on the A66 in South Bank at 3.39am today (Saturday, August 22), and involved a marked police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat.
Cleveland Police said the Passat was travelling in the wrong direction when it collided with the police car, which was travelling in the correct direction.
All seven occupants of the vehicles – two police officers and five members of the public – were pronounced dead at the scene.
Pictures from the scene show a police cordon in place.
The road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in today’s incident.
“No one should leave their home and not return safely, including police officers serving their communities and protecting the people of Cleveland.
“This tragic incident will be felt across Cleveland, within our communities and throughout the entire policing family.”
A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is mandatory in these circumstances.
Cleveland Police said an investigation is under way and that all families are being offered specialist support.
The North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service and Cleveland Fire were also at the scene.
Anna Turley, MP for Redcar and Cleveland, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the fatal collision on the A66 this morning.
“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and with everyone affected by this terrible incident.
“Thank you to all of our emergency services, who have worked through the night responding to this devastating incident.
“The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes.
“We would ask everyone to avoid speculating online to respect the families and the police while they do their work at this terrible time.”
