In recent years, we have seen the softer side of Manchester United legend Roy Keane come to light.
Through his work on TV, the real Roy Keane, the one which his teammates spoke about, has shown his true colours and revealed himself.
A tenacious warrior on the pitch, Keane has a much more gentle side off it. Just look at his recent Stick to Football episode with Seamus Coleman to see how kind he can be with his praise.
That kindness extends to strangers too. John Gregg, son of United icon and Northern Ireland legend Harry Gregg, appears on the ‘On the Spot’ podcast this week, and in a teaser for the episode, John reveals how Keane rang him on the day of his father’s funeral to send his best wishes.
“My phone rang, and I answered the phone. It was Roy Keane, and I don’t – I’m not going to sit here and tell you I know Roy Keane. I don’t know him. “He simply just says ‘John Gregg?’. I said ‘yes’. He said ‘John, it’s Roy, Roy Keane,’
“And he was – I’m telling you now, something some of the things he said to me was blew me away because I’ll never get the opportunity to thank him.
“Definitely not, probably not be in his company again. But I tell you what, he talked about dad. He talked about losing his dad two or three months before. He told me straight out, he said ‘it’ll be the toughest day you’ll have in your life.’
He says, ‘but the most important thing is, you look after your mum and your family.’
I actually told him my dad worshiped him as a player.
“And I put obviously the phone went down, and I was blown away by it, and I was shocked.
“I don’t know him, haven’t a clue. But for that man to take time 10 minutes out and ring me… and it did help me. I’m not going to tell you a lie, it helped me massively.”
