South London boozer is crowned London’s best pub of 2026

An independent micropub in south London has been named Greater London Pub of the Year 2026 by the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA).

The Cockpit in Chislehurst, which opened in 2020, won the accolade after being a runner-up in both 2024 and 2025.

The popular pub, which shares its space with Roses Florists, is run by Adam Miller and Paul Steadman.

It has built a reputation for the quality and condition of its regularly changing selection of cask ale and ciders, as well as wine and spirits.

According to CAMRA, The Cockpit enforces a £1 fine for mobile phone usage and foul language.

This is just the latest honour for the boozer, which was named Bromley CAMRA Pub of the Year earlier this year.

The winner was decided from the 12 Greater London regional winners for 2026, with The Hope in Carshalton winning in 2025.

Speaking about the win, Adam Miller said: “Flabbersmacked we are. Absolutely gobberghasted.

“Honoured to be rubbing shoulders with such a resplendent arsenal of boozers, let alone to be recognised by CAMRA as top of the pubs for Greater London this year.

“A sea-spanning embrace to everyone that has supported us since opening five years ago. So many of you have invested a titanic amount of enthusiasm into what we love to do. It makes every day a joy.

“Above all, a pious curtsy to our team and everyone behind the scenes. The invigoration and zeal with which you approach each day is a constant vitalising tonic and a perpetual pleasure.”

CAMRA has been running its Pub of the Year awards since 1988, with marks awarded in eight separate criteria.

Pubs are rated on quality and condition of real ale/cider/perry, promotion and knowledge of real ale, cleanliness and staff hygiene, community focus, service and welcome, style, décor and atmosphere, sympathy with CAMRA’s aims and overall impression and value.

The overall UK winner for Pub of the Year will be announced later this year.
