St Luke’s Church in Scarborough plans to create new car park

​Rev Michael Cansdale wants to create a 16-space car park at St Luke’s Church near Scarborough Hospital.

​The Anglican church is located at a prominent position at the junction of Scalby Road and Stepney Drive, and its facilities are regularly used by a “significant number of visitors and community groups”.

​If plans are approved, the formation of a new “sensitively positioned car park” would take place, alongside the widening of the existing vehicular access from Scalby Road.

​The proposed formation of a new car park and widening of the vehicular access at St Luke’s Church represents a “carefully considered and sensitive improvement to the existing site”.

​According to submitted plans, the scheme would improve accessibility, enhance safety, reduce congestion at the church entrance, and provide much-needed additional parking capacity to support the wide range of community uses.

​“The design respects the established landscape character of the site, retains existing vegetation where possible and uses appropriate low-impact materials,” plans state.

​“Overall, the proposals will enhance the functionality and long-term sustainability of St Luke’s Church as an important community facility serving the local area.”

​The development also aims to improve views towards the church entrance and enhance the overall setting of the building.

​The widened vehicular access from Scalby Road will “improve safety, visibility and ease of movement for vehicles entering and leaving the site” as well as improving “circulation within the grounds and reduce congestion during busy periods”.

​A design statement concludes: “Enhancing accessibility is a fundamental principle of the scheme. The additional parking provision and improved access arrangements will support safer and more convenient access for all users, including elderly and less mobile visitors attending church services and community activities.”

​North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the proposal which is open to representations.
