University Hospitals Tees said recent cold weather has led to an increase in people attending the emergency departments and urgent treatment centres, particularly with injuries caused by slips, trips and falls.

Amy Oxley, deputy director of nursing at University Hospitals Tees, said their services were affected by the challenges being thrown at them.

“Like many hospitals across the region at this time of year, we are seeing an increase in the number of admissions to our hospitals and healthcare services,” she said.

“Delivering safe, high-quality care remains our top priority, and our dedicated teams are working tirelessly to ensure every patient is seen as quickly and safely as possible.”

She added that icy conditions had contributed significantly to the rise in attendances, prompting the trust to urge residents to take extra care when travelling.

Members of the public are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys during colder conditions, allow extra time for travel, and check for road closures or transport delays.

Drivers are also encouraged to carry essential items in their cars, such as warm clothing, a torch, de-icer or ice-scraper, a warning triangle, a high-visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.

The deputy director also stressed the importance of checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbours to ensure they are safe, warm and have access to essentials.

Despite the increased demand, the trusts reminded patients to continue attending scheduled appointments unless told otherwise.

The trust has asked people to only attend A&E for serious injuries or life-threatening emergencies.

Ms Oxley added: “For other non-serious injury or non-life-threatening emergencies, please consider using NHS 111 online to be directed to the right care for your needs.”
