Two of America’s biggest boxing stars clash tonight at Madison Square Garden with Shakur Stevenson taking on Teofimo Lopez
Two of America’s most prominent boxing figures are set to collide this evening as Shakur Stevenson takes on Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez – who has captured titles in two weight divisions – has maintained an impressive streak since stepping up to 140lb after competing at 135lb. The fighter showed early promise and secured his first lightweight championship in 2019 with a brutal knockout of Richard Commey.
The 28 year old then produced a magnificent performance against Vasiliy Lomachenko, before experiencing an unexpected loss to George Kambosos Jr – a setback that led him to move up in weight, where he has thrived ever since. Lopez enters tonight’s bout with six consecutive wins under his belt, most recently defeating Arnold Barboza Jr.
Stevenson has brought a refreshing energy to professional boxing. The 2016 Olympic silver medallist achieved world champion status just three years later when he outpointed Joet Gonzalez for the vacant WBO featherweight title.
Having won belts at featherweight, super-featherweight and lightweight, supporters have often suggested the fighter needs to deliver more reliable performances. His previous two victories against Josh Padley and William Zepeda demonstrated his true capabilities, though such displays haven’t always been forthcoming, reports the Mirror.
Here’s everything you need to know before tonight’s action gets underway….

Quotes corner Teofimo Lopez stated: “I’m the champion. Stevenson is trying to come in and take what I have. It ain’t happening. His people are telling him to play it safe because they know what he’s up against. But in fights like this, with so much on the line, you gotta take risks. You gotta be a dog to take it from a champion. And I’m the dog in this fight, a true champion. Always have been.”
Shakur Stevenson responded: “I think he’s nervous, and he’s giving off energy as if he’s trying to delude his brain into believing things that are basically not gonna happen. I just don’t know how he can delude his brain into believing that, when he didn’t make Steve Claggett – that’s his name, Steve Claggett – quit? He didn’t make him quit. He didn’t make George Kambosos quit. He did not make [Vasiliy] Lomachenko quit. So what in the world makes him think that he’s gonna make me quit?”.
