The best gym leggings for comfort, support and style

Whether you’re a weightlifter, runner or Pilates devotee, the best gym leggings should carry you comfortably through your workout without distraction. That means no baggy knees or fabric that turns sheer when you drop into a squat.

As a personal trainer and fitness journalist working out six days a week, I’m familiar with what a good pair of gym leggings should look and feel like. I’ve tried endless pairs, including high-waisted workout leggings, sweat-wicking gym pants, seamless gym leggings and several high-impact workout tights.

Much like a good sports bra, a decent pair of gym leggings should strike the balance between comfort, fit and performance while also keeping you cool and dry.

Brands such as Berghaus and M&S offer styles at the cheaper end of the spectrum, as well as Lululemon, Vuori, Alo and Sweaty Betty, requiring bigger budgets. Here are my top five.

How to choose the best gym leggings

The first and arguably most important aspect to consider when shopping for gym leggings, is fit.

Your leggings should feel supportive without digging in and they should stay in place when squatting, running, stretching or simply walking. Each pair has features made specifically for various activities, so make sure you aren’t buying a pair of yoga leggings to wear for your treadmill runs. Yoga leggings, for example, tend to be made from softer fabric while running leggings are made from stretchier, sweatproof fabric.

Look for four-way stretch materials for flexibility that moves with you. If you’re someone who sweats easily, go for moisture-wicking or quick-drying fabrics that help you to stay feeling fresh. The fabric should also stay opaque even when pulled or stretched, particularly for lower-body exercises, such as squats.

A high waistband offers more support and may be more flattering than a lower waistband. And don’t forget to check the seams; they can be irritating, which can impact comfort.

Although price doesn’t always dictate quality, it’s worth testing out a range of gym leggings to see which fits you best.
