Dogs are welcome on the beach all year-round
Summer is nearly behind us, and autumn is just around the corner. This means darker nights, colder days and nights and a change from shorts and skirts to trousers and leggings.
While beaches are the perfect places for a summer’s day out, they are also good to visit in the autumn months. Cambridgeshire is landlocked so it doesn’t have its own beaches, but it’s lucky to be close to counties such as Norfolk and Suffolk that are home to some beautiful beaches.
One beach that is under two hours from Cambridge and is perfect for an autumnal escape is Pakefield Beach, situated on the southern edge of Lowestoft. Described as “rustic and pebbled”, the beach is a mix of sand and shingle. It’s described as a “beach where you get away from it all”. One person who visited the beach described it as “undiscovered” and “peaceful”.
The beach is also backed by “dramatic” cliffs, providing some beautiful and scenic views. Beach huts line the seaside destination and the reviewer described them as “brightening” the location “against the dark skies”. On the Suffolk Coast website, it said: “A little more wild than the neighbouring beach at Lowestoft, Pakefield Beach is made up of a sand and pebble beach, with marram grass and dunes and fishing boats to sunbathe amongst.
“Children will love searching the shores for flotsam and jetsum and throwing stones in the sea. The promenade, which leads from Lowestoft Beach, runs as far as the Church and is lined with pretty-pastel coloured beach huts, some of which are available to hire.
“This stretch is a popular spot for fishing, horse riding, wind surfing and kite surfing and those looking for a more rural beach experience.”
For pet owners, the beach is also dog friendly with four-legged friends welcomed all throughout the year. However, owners are advised to remember to pick up their pet’s mess and use one of the bins located along the beach.
As well as dog walking, the beach is also the perfect place to fly a kite, ride a horse and windsurf. To enjoy a place to eat and drink, the nearest places to enjoy a bite to eat are Zak’s Sunrise Cafe on Lowestoft South Beach and a cafe in Kensington Gardens.
