Things to do at Beamish Museum this Bank Holiday weekend

The Living Museum of the North, near Stanley, will be open from 10am to 5pm each day.

The programme is part of Beamish’s Summer of Fun: Step into Stories season, which runs until the end of August.

Visitors can explore the museum’s 1900s Town, 1900s Pit Village, 1950s Town and Georgian areas, ride historic trams and buses, and meet costumed staff bringing the region’s history to life.

Brass bands in the 1900s Town

Music is among the highlights of the weekend, with the Redman Park Bandstand in Beamish’s 1900s Town hosting live performances.

On Saturday, August 29, the North East Concert Band will perform from 2pm until 4pm.

The performance is included with an Unlimited Pass.

Also scheduled for Saturday is a performance by Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band, from 2pm until 4pm at the Redman Park Bandstand.

Visitors should check Beamish’s event listings nearer the time for the final music timetable.

Summer activities for families

Families visiting over the weekend can take part in Beamish’s summer activity programme, which includes storytelling, trails and hands-on experiences across the site.

The museum’s summer listings have included:

• Suffragette marches through the 1900s Town, where visitors can join in with sashes, rosettes and placards.
• The NHS Clinic teddy-bear sessions, where younger visitors can bring a teddy for a check-up.
• Storytelling and other family activities linked to Beamish’s historic communities.

Some activities are scheduled on specific days, so families should check the museum’s daily programme before travelling.

The museum is open daily from 10am until 5pm during the summer season, including Bank Holidays.

Standard admission gives visitors an Unlimited Pass, allowing return visits for a year, subject to the museum’s terms and conditions.

As the museum is a large outdoor site, visitors should allow a full day to explore and dress for changing weather.
