Two arrested as man in critical condition after Thornaby crash

Police say the cyclist was involved in a collision with a Surron bike on Thorntree Road in Thornaby near the junction with Derwent Road at around 1:50pm on Saturday, January 31.

The man was taken to James Cook University Hospital, where his condition is described as ‘critical’.

Two boys, aged 15 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remain on police bail while enquiries continue.

Police are appealing for witnesses and urge anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 019177.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision which has left a man in a “critical” condition in hospital.

“The incident took place around 1.50pm on Saturday, January 31, on Thorntree Road, Thornaby, near to the junction with Derwent Road.

“A 46-year-old man, who was cycling on Thorntree Road, was involved in a collision with a Surron bike.

“He was taken to James Cook University Hospital, where his condition is described as “critical”.

“Two teenage boys aged 15 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and they remain on police bail whilst enquiries continue.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 019177.
