Two taken to hospital after crash on A181, Wheatley Hill

Man taken to hospital after hit by car on Station Road, Darlington

Emergency services were called to the A181 at Wheatley Hill at about 10.50am this morning (March 7) after reports of a crash.

Two ambulance crews and a paramedic were called to the incident, and two people were taken to North Tees Hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on the A181 at Wheatley Hill at 10.52am on March 7.

“We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader.

“Two patients were treated and discharged at the scene and two patients were transported to North Tees Hospital.”

The road remains closed following the crash, and police have warned drivers to avoid the area.

A spokesperson from Durham Police said: “The road is closed between Wheatley Hill Service Station and the Salters Lane junction at Wingate (both directions) due to a collision whilst emergency services deal with the incident.

“Please avoid the route – an update will ensue once the scene is cleared and road is reopened.”

York Green Party activist recognised for Ukraine work

Mike Kearney, a National Education Union (NEU) representative, received the award at the NEU’s national conference in Brighton for his solidarity work supporting teachers in Ukraine.

Daniel Kebede, president of the union, said: “Congratulations to Michael for his exemplary international solidarity work.

“Michael’s commitments to Ukraine’s teachers and pupils have been unwavering.”

Mr Kearney was honoured for his ongoing efforts to support Ukrainian teachers and students, and is travelling with support from the NEU Ukraine Solidarity Network.

On April 2, he set off from Brighton in a van delivering aid to Ukraine.

The van included educational materials donated by York schools, along with Easter eggs for children and families.

He will leave the van in Ukraine to assist with ongoing aid delivery.
