Harry Potter fans flocked to the town in 2005 to have their pictures taken with the street sign
A “vibrant” Cambridgeshire town has street names inspired by books about a popular wizard. Harry Potter has been a part of people’s lives for nearly three decades, whether that is through reading the books or watching the films.
In Cambridgeshire, there is one town that has a street name that you could say has been inspired by the book series. Cambourne is seen as a “new town”, as it didn’t exist until 1999. In 1996, plans were discussed to build a new town between Cambridge and St Neots.
It was discussed that there would be 3,300 houses in the new town, with this number doubled to around 6,600 by 2017. Within the town, it has a street named Quidditch Lane.
The game of Quidditch is a wizarding sport featured in Harry Potter where two teams of seven players fly on broomsticks and try to score goals or catch the golden snitch. Sadly, the street was not actually named after the Hogwarts game, but named after a feature in the local area. All street names in Cambourne were named after features in the surrounding area.
However, it didn’t stop Harry Potter fans travelling to Cambourne. In 2005, Harry Potter fans flocked to Cambourne to have their photos taken with the sign.
The BBC reported at the time that residents along the street also named their houses after the wizarding world of Hogwarts. Some named their houses The Golden Snitch, the Quaffle and Muggles.
Today, Cambourne is described as a “vibrant community”, according to Cambourne Town Council. Since it was established, its population has rapidly grown due to more houses being built in the area.
It was originally going to be called Monkfield, after the name of the original farm which used to be on the land. However, Cambourne was chosen as a way to combine the names of Cambridge, and nearby Bourn.
It is made up of three areas, which are Lower Cambourne, Upper Cambourne and Great Cambourne. The town has two pubs, which are The Monkfield Arms and The Third Man Bar and Eatery at Cambourne Cricket Club. The Monkfield Arms is described as a “real village pub” with a “vibrant atmosphere”, according to the pub website.
If you want to buy a home in Cambourne, the average price is £401,220, according to Rightmove. The majority of homes sold in the last year were detached properties, with the average price of £523,317. Terraced homes sold for an average price of £325,348, with semi-detached properties fetching £393,731.
