The rodent population on a Co Down beach has grown as the local council has issued guidance and advice to beach users.

For the second year in a row, Ards and North Down Borough Council has implemented a pest control programme on Millisle Beach following “growth in the rodent population.”

Beginning on Wednesday, August 19 and lasting for “a number of weeks,” poison bait will be used on the site to target known burrows.

A spokesperson for Ards and North Down Borough Council added: “Signage will be in place to advise beach users and Council Officers will be visiting the site over the coming days to assess the situation.

“In case of accidental poisoning, contact Emergency Department as soon as possible. For pets, contact your vet. Note: Rodenticide active agent – Cholecalciferol.”

The local authority has also issued guidance to any beach users in the coming weeks:

  • Please keep all pets on leads / under strict control at all times, on all parts of beach
  • Children should be supervised at all times
  • Please take any food waste away with you
  • Do not feed the birds as this is also feeding the rats

Reportings of any dead rats should be reported to env.health@ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk to arrange appropriate disposal.
