They are the generation most worried about the climate – but it seems Gen Z aren’t quite as concerned when they’re standing under the shower.

More than half of 18 to 29-year-olds spend at least ten minutes in the shower every day, according to new research.

That could mean using as much as 150 litres of water in a single wash – enough to fill around 750 standard drinking glasses.

The findings make for an awkward contradiction for a generation that has grown up with warnings about droughts, water shortages and the climate crisis.

And while a 10-minute shower might feel like a harmless daily luxury, scientists say it is far longer than necessary for washing your body.

Dr Pablo Pereira-Doel, an environmental scientist at the University of Surrey, recently told the Daily Mail that three minutes is a sensible target for a body-only shower.

Those washing their hair can add another two minutes, bringing the total to around five minutes.

And this includes the time spent simply enjoying the warm spray, meaning there is little scientific justification for lingering under the water for ten minutes or more.

The poll, carried out by scientists at Let’s Save Water, found that younger adults were among the most likely to take lengthy showers, despite also reporting high levels of concern about environmental issues.

While 52 per cent of those aged 18-29 said they take showers that last at least ten minutes, this dropped to 39 per cent of Millennials, who are aged between 30 and 45.

Meanwhile only 28 per cent of Gen X, aged 46 to 61, said the same.

The organisation, which polled 2,000 British people from all age groups, said that women were more likely than men to take extended showers, with 27 per cent saying they showered for more than ten minutes daily, compared with 19 per cent of men.

A spokesman for Let’s Save Water said: ‘With drought conditions this summer bringing a renewed focus on this issue, Let’s Save Water is reinforcing a simple message – water is precious.

‘To protect it, we all need to use less.

‘On average, adults believe they use around 30 litres of water a day, when the true figure is closer to 140 litres.

‘Our research shows the difference between generations, with Gen Z’ers most likely to have showers longer than 10 minutes.’

In the UK, household showers last around 7.5 minutes on average, according to Dr Pereira-Doel.

However, studies have shown that showers regularly run much longer, with some people spending close to 40 minutes under the stream of water.

‘As for why people linger… the answer is that for a large share of showers, getting clean isn’t the point,’ he explained.

‘Over four in 10 showers in our sample were taken for reasons unrelated to hygiene: relaxation, self–care, warming up on a cold morning. When a shower is doing that job, its length isn’t a decision anyone is consciously making.’

People in soft water areas tend to shower around a fifth longer than those in hard water areas, he said.

‘The likely explanation is that shampoo lathers more richly and rinses more easily in soft water, so the shower feels better and people linger,’ he added.

Morning showers also tend to be shorter, because most people have somewhere they need to be. Meanwhile, with evening or weekend showers, there is less of a time constraint.

Low water pressure can also extend showers, ‘because people may compensate for a weak spray by staying in longer to feel properly rinsed’.

Officers will be offering crime prevention advice and maintaining a visible presence across Greater Manchester in a bid to help students stay safe during Freshers’ events and throughout the academic year.

The force has already attended Freshers’ Week activities at the University of Salford, where officers provided personal safety guidance and crime prevention advice to students.

“Our officers are committed to working with partners to help you have the very best experience, and we will be patrolling student residential areas, and tackling high traffic areas and the night-time economy, to ensure you feel safe and know how to protect yourself from crime.”

As part of the campaign, GMP is also running fraud and cybercrime awareness events, including two sessions in Bolton.

Students and residents can attend an event at Bolton College on September 21 from 10am to 1pm, while another will take place at the University of Greater Manchester‘s Chancellor’s Building on September 29 between 10am and 1pm.

The events will be raising awareness about fraud and cyber crime awareness helping people find out more about how to keep yourself safe online. 

Police are encouraging students to be aware of issues including spiking, fraud, burglary, bike theft and unlicensed taxis.

Advice includes keeping drinks in sight on nights out, securing homes and bicycles, planning journeys in advance and only using licensed taxi operators.

The force is also reminding students that support is available through specialist services for those affected by sexual violence or abuse, while anyone who believes they have been a victim of spiking is encouraged to seek help and report incidents as soon as possible.

At its worst, the debilitating condition left her unable to walk properly or use her singing voice as she once had.

After delivering her first song of the show, On ne change pas (We don’t change), she said: ‘I had promised myself not to cry. Here we are… I’m standing on stage in this city that I love so much, thanks to your support and your love.

‘I have to admit, though, that the road was rocky. The journey was longer than expected, with unplanned stops along the way.

‘But I hung in there. A faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains. I believed in it. And here it is. The sun – the sun is here. The sun, right in front of me.’ 

She continued: ‘I made a promise to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live! Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me,’ she then said in English.

Speaking of the uphill battle she waged with her health, she said: ‘By living with it day in and day out, I’ve come to terms with it. And I’ve decided to make it my reason for living.’

She continued: ‘But look around here – all around you, right here in this room – we don’t know what the person next to us is going through. 

‘There are people going through hardships, grief and sorrow. There are people radiating energy and joy. So let’s take that energy and share it. That’s what music is for. Tonight, we’ll sing, we’ll dance and we’ll celebrate.’

Celine’s intense rehabilitation programme has seen her try out new medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy. 

In order to ensure she’s physically able to perform, Celine has been working on her strength with 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week as well as twice-weekly ballet and barre classes.

Her home gym is also decked out with weights, a treadmill and a reformer machine, with Celine revealing her flexibility has increased since she started her new exercise regime.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about her new regime, she described it as falling and getting back up repeatedly, adding that she was proud of herself for achieving something that her body wasn’t ‘born to do’.

‘It is a progressive condition,’ she noted. ‘I don’t like to say ‘disease.’ Disease makes you go like this,’ she said, scrunching her nose and saying, ”Kevin, you’re such a disease.”

Celine laid bare the brutality of the condition in her 2024 documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. 

Yet in recent days she has looked in high spirits while out greeting fans in Paris ahead of her shows. 

The residency will see her take to the stage for 16 shows in autumn 2026 and 10 additional dates in May 2027.

Two teenagers who stabbed a 17-year-old boy to death outside McDonald’s have been jailed.

Yeray Sanchez Morales was sitting outside the restaurant with a friend on Old Kent Road, south-east London, at just before 11pm on August 27 last year when he was attacked.

The teen, who wanted to become a PE teacher, was stabbed and hit with a bottle in front of a crowd of youths.

He suffered nine wounds to his neck and chest and died in hospital a week later.

The Met Police said his killers boasted of the crime by posting photos of their bloodied hands and knives on social media.

Detectives also pieced together CCTV images to track their movements and match their clothing to determine who struck the fatal blows.

Yeray’s friend, who survived the attack, said they did not know why they had been targeted.

On Friday, four men and three boys were convicted on a range offences in relation to the circumstances surrounding Yeray’s death.

Christhofer Jesus Vasquez, 18, of Enfield, north London, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to four years in jail.

He had pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article in January and was jailed for one year for that offence, to run concurrently with the first sentence.

Andres Tapia Londono, 18, of Haringey, north London, was convicted of manslaughter and handed a four-year jail sentence.

Isaac Ros Ramirez, 18, of Hackney, east London, and Juan Betancourt Hoyos, 21, of Mount Pleasant Road, Haringey, were convicted of violent disorder and given a community order.

A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted of violent disorder and sentenced to 16 months in jail.

A second 16-year-old boy was convicted of violent disorder and given a 12-month youth rehabilitation order.

A third 16-year-old boy, who had pleaded guilty to violent disorder, intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article in relation to a second victim in February was given a community order.

Yeray’s mother Elena Morales said her son ‘loved to dance and sing’ and dreamt of becoming a PE teacher.

She said: ‘Yeray was only 17 years old when his life was stolen. He was a sensitive, happy, polite and generous young man, always ready to help anyone who needed it.

‘He had a special way of connecting with others and a kindness that shone through everything he did.

‘He loved to dance and sing. He had just finished the first year of a sport science course and he dreamt of becoming a PE teacher.

‘Yeray had his whole life ahead. He was in love and full of dreams and projects.’

She added: ‘His death has left a wound so deep that it can never heal.

‘The sadness and pain have scarred our family and his friends forever.

‘His absence is felt every day. Every birthday, every family occasion reminds us that Yeray should be there with us.

‘As a mother, I have no words to describe the pain that crushes my soul.’

After Yeray’s death, detectives reached out to the teenagers who had witnessed the attack and, through appeals, obtained mobile phone footage of the night.

They tracked the individuals on the footage and local CCTV, and found them on social media where ‘images of bloodied hands and knives’ had been shared.

One of the 16-year-olds was found to have booked a taxi to take him away from the scene shortly after Yeray was attacked.

A specialist forensic team was able to further link the group to the crime as one individual was identified through DNA left on the rim of a bottle he had used to attack Yeray.

Detective Sergeant Debbie Barge, who led the investigation, said: ‘Yeray was just a teenager with his whole life ahead of him.

‘This was cruelly cut in an act of violence that deeply shocked the whole community.

‘The majority of the teenagers present were horrified by what they witnessed – we would like to thank them for working closely with us to bring those responsible for justice.

‘Detectives worked quickly to track down the suspects, proving their roles in and surrounding Yeray’s death.

‘Our thoughts remain with his family and hope these convictions can bring them some degree of peace.’

There was a sense that this was coming. Cardiff City had spent the opening weeks of the season dominating possession, creating chances and then finding increasingly inventive ways of not winning football matches.

Today, finally, it all came together.

Jack Moylan struck twice as Cardiff City secured their first Championship victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic at Cardiff City Stadium, bringing an emphatic end to their seven-game wait for three points.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side had been crying out for the sort of clinical edge that had eluded them in recent weeks and they found it almost immediately.

Moylan opened the scoring after just eight minutes, producing another reminder of the attacking quality he possesses since his summer move from Lincoln City. The Irishman had already scored against Sheffield United earlier this season, but this was a far more significant contribution.

Cardiff’s pressure continued and Yousef Salech doubled their advantage midway through the first half, giving the Bluebirds a two-goal cushion and, crucially, taking one of the chances they had been creating with regularity.

Charlton, who arrived in the Welsh capital having gone four games without a win and without scoring in their previous three Championship matches, gave themselves hope when Tyreece Campbell pulled one back before the interval.

For once, though, there was no late collapse.

Instead, Cardiff went back on the front foot after the break and Moylan produced the moment of the afternoon just after the hour mark.

The midfielder cut inside before unleashing a superb right-footed strike into the roof of the net, leaving Arthur Okonkwo with no chance and restoring Cardiff’s two-goal advantage. Sky Sports described it as a brilliant strike as Moylan completed his double.

From there, Cardiff managed the game and saw out the victory they had been craving.

It was a result that mattered for more than just the three points. After defeats to QPR, Portsmouth and Bolton had left Barry-Murphy’s side under increasing pressure, Cardiff finally had something tangible to show for the encouraging passages of play that had characterised much of their start to life back in the Championship.

They had scored seven goals across their opening seven league games. Against Charlton, they scored three in one afternoon.

Moylan was the difference-maker, but this was ultimately a collective response from a Cardiff side who had spent the opening month of the season being told they needed to turn performances into results.

This time, they did exactly that.

“The people of Scotland do not want a referendum right now. And I say that not just on the basis of all the opinion polls – which are absolutely clear that’s the case – but also the conversations I’ve been having right across the country. I’ve been campaigning across Scotland without stop for the last 10 months now, and it’s clear to me that’s the case.

“We’ll continue to make the case for a stronger Scotland in a changing UK. I’m not in this for the status quo. I’m in this to achieve a stronger Scotland.”

Labour’s path to power

“I’ve always had a long-term frustration that the Labour party ends up in every Holyrood election thinking that we can form a government by some kind of narrow path. If you can’t win seats everywhere in Scotland, you cannot form a government. So it’s a long-term frustration of mine, that we ended up back in that position in May, trying to follow a narrow path.”

“We’re not big enough to have factions. As Scotland’s challenges have got bigger, the Labour party has got smaller. We need to regain momentum, scale, size and ambitions for the country.”

Asked if he would oppose compulsory redundancies in the Scottish public sector, as the SNP Government tries to plug a £5 billion blackhole in its finances, Marra said: “Yes, I will.

“But it’s difficult for me to see how the Scottish Government gets to, to where they say they are going to get to, without taking those kinds of actions. I am against it. But it is a signal of the catastrophic mess the SNP has made on the public finances. I have been talking about this for years, the situation where we are headed to. They are not getting a grip on the public finances. All the independent forecasters are warning it could be even worse, because they have no taken action. We are coming up a real crunch.”

The US and Denmark have announced a deal on Greenland’s security, resolving a diplomatic dispute sparked by President Donald Trump’s threats to seize it by force.

Trump said the agreement would grant the US “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland welcomed the deal to “strengthen security” in the region, which they said was expected to be signed next week, but did not outline its contents.

The announcement comes after months of threats by Trump to “take” Greenland over national security concerns, citing its strategic location for defence purposes and its mineral wealth.

No text of the agreement has been released. Trump said the deal came with “no cost to the United States” and would grant it the ability “to do what is necessary” to “secure and defend the security of Greenland”, in a post on Truth Social.

He said it included a rule that no US adversary could maintain a military presence in Greenland or “make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval”.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was “pleased that there is a prospect of a good agreement” for all three parties, which was expected to be signed at the UN General Assembly next week.

The deal “strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area” while also recognising “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination”, she said in a joint statement with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The agreement would still need to go through “the necessary parliamentary procedures to enter into force” once signed, the statement noted.

Nielsen said it was “gratifying that we are about to enter into an agreement that ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance”.

“The agreement recognises Greenland’s interests and our place in international co-operation. It is for the benefit of us all,” he said.

A Nato spokesperson said the military alliance welcomed the deal, which would “help advance security, stability and cooperation in this vital region”.

Ellie, who would not give her surname, was left horrified when an ‘inappropriate’ man ran into the road in Manchester city centre and hopped onto her motorcycle without her consent.

The 32-year-old uploaded a video of the incident online and received a wave of support from social media users who branded the man ‘vile’.

Footage – captured on her friend Charlotte’s bike helmet camera on September 12 – shows Ellie waiting in traffic on Oldham Street on her bright green Kawasaki ER-6F bike.

Dressed in all black with a black helmet, the biker revs her vehicle as she gets ready to start moving again.

Then, from nowhere, and in front of crowds of passersby, a man dressed in blue jeans and a grey jacket dashes from the pavement to the middle of the road and mounts the bike behind Ellie.

Steadying himself, he then grabs the stunned biker’s hips, as screams of surprise ring out among the bystanders.  

Ellie then shouts and gives the man a slap across the face with her right hand, holding out her palm afterwards incredulously.

The biker fires a sharp glance at the gaggle of men and shakes her head in reaction to the unpleasant incident.

While waiting at the next set of lights, Ellie tells her friend, ‘I am shaking,’ before the pair mock the man’s pained reaction to the slap.

The primary school employee has claimed her ‘survival instincts’ kicked in once the man was on her bike.

‘Never would have happened if I was with some of the guys,’ Ellie, from Salford, said.

‘I was so focused on not dropping the bike I genuinely didn’t even process how inappropriate the whole thing was until afterwards.

‘Gave him a good whack though, so at least the survival instincts kicked in.’

Ellie shared the outrageous footage online, where the clip racked up over 387,000 likes.

She captioned it: ‘Someone come get their grandad. He’s out here touching women and bikes.’

In response, one person wrote: ‘He wouldn’t do that to a man.’
