Whitby RNLI rescues casualty with broken leg from harbour

Whitby’s RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched on Saturday, July 25, at 11.37am, quickly locating the injured person near a pontoon.

Paramedics were already on site and had established the casualty had a broken leg, but they were unable to safely recover the casualty from the water.

The RNLI crew transferred the injured individual to the inshore lifeboat, then to Whitby Lifeboat Station, where paramedics continued providing medical care.

The RNLI’s Adam Wright, helm on the inshore lifeboat, said: ‘We would urge people to take extra care entering the water within harbours. There are many hidden dangers that can cause injury.”

Whitby is bustling with visitors this weekend as crowds descended from all over the country for the town’s colourful Steampunk Weekend.

It was an opportunity for the Whitby RNLI Lifeboat to stage a fundraising and awareness ‘Flag weekend’ with members on hand at the town’s bandstand and by the harbour to promote water safety and the work of its volunteers.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Thank you to everyone who came along to day one of flag weekend and were so generous!

“We have more of the same today (Sunday) at the bandstand from 10am, with a lifeboat demonstration in the harbour at 3pm before we wrap up at 4pm.”
