Who Will Monster Season 5 Be About? Creator Teases Ideas

With audiences currently gripped by the fourth iteration of the grisly Netflix anthology series Monster, its co-creator is already looking ahead to its future.

A fifth season of Monster is yet to be given the greenlight by Netflix, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from speculating about what a future incarnation of the controversial drama could focus on next.

TV superproducer Ryan Murphy has previously teased that he and his collaborators have a “‘maybe one day’ file” when it comes to Monster, which co-creator Ian Brennan shed some light on during an interview with People magazine.

He claimed there are “so many” potential subjects of Monster’s fifth season, revealing that serial Dennis Rader – known to true crime followers by his pseudonym BTK – was one that had been “talked about” in the past.

“[He] is a fascinating one”, he added, before revealing Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway (the so-called Green River Killer) and even Luigi Mangione as ideas that had also been tossed around behind the scenes.

Ryan Murphy previously ruled out the idea of a season based on Ted Bundy, claiming that his crimes don’t provide enough of a fresh commentary on American culture and society.

“When you look at those crimes, what are the themes there?” he told Variety last year. “It doesn’t ask you any questions about society. It feels too murderous – not interesting enough.”

During his People interview, Ian Brennan agreed: “It’s all tricky because most murderers just aren’t that interesting. It’s horrific, and you don’t want to watch it.

“That’s what’s so tricky about the show is finding a subject matter that you can spend 10 hours with. It’s one thing to watch a movie about something, to spend 90 minutes in the head of someone, but six or seven hours is a whole other thing.”

He added that the trick is finding a subject that makes viewers want to “lean in”regardless of how gruesome what’s being conveyed on screen might be.

All four seasons of Monster – focussing on Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, Ed Gein and Lizzie Borden – are available to stream on Netflix now.
