A vehicle struck the wall of the JD Gym at Angouleme Retail Park in Bury shortly before 5pm. Eye-witnesses spoke of seeing a ‘barrage of concrete and bricks’ flying into the gym, with a man using the machine closest to the wall sent ‘flying through the air’.

The gym was evacuated and forced to close for a number of hours following the incident, as the vehicle was said to be ‘wedged’ in the wall.

She was taken to hospital and initially was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving. In an update today (April 17) the force said that the woman has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The gym building was declared safe by Bury Council surveyors and it fully reopened to the public on Wednesday (April 15).

In a full statement on Facebook, the gym said: “Following yesterday’s incident, we would like to thank our members for their patience and understanding. The safety and wellbeing of all our colleagues and members, especially those directly affected by this incident, remains our priority.

“We can confirm that JD Gyms Bury will reopen today (Wednesday 15th April) at 2:00pm. The damage has now been assessed, and contractors are on site carrying out repair and clean up works.

“As a safety measure, hoarding will be in place and a small section of the gym will be temporarily unavailable while works continue behind it with just the 8-station and boxing bag out of action. All areas outside the affected zone will be fully operational.”
