Woman killed and three injured after horror crash between car and lorry

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a crash where a woman in her 40s was sadly pronounced dead and three people were taken to the hospital

A woman has died and three people have been seriously injured following a crash between a lorry and a car in North Wales.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in the Conwy Tunnel on the A55 and both sides of the expressway were closed following the incident. Several air ambulances were deployed to the scene, but this evening North Wales Police confirmed that a woman in her 40s, who was travelling in the car, was sadly pronounced dead.

The force said two people were airlifted to hospitals in Stoke and Aintree after suffering serious injuries. A third person was taken by ambulance to Aintree, police added.

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed it dispatched four emergency ambulances and two high acuity response units, supported by four off-duty paramedics who stopped to assist, North Wales Live reported. A spokesperson said: “Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in three Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters. Three patients were transferred to hospital for further treatment.”

North Wales Police said in a statement: “A woman has sadly died following a collision on the A55 in Conwy. At around midday on Thursday, 29 January, we responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A55 westbound at J17 in Conwy Morfa involving a HGV and a car.

“Emergency services attended but despite best efforts, a woman in her 40s, who was travelling in the car, was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Two people were airlifted to hospitals in Stoke and Aintree with serious injuries, while a third person was taken to by ambulance to Aintree.

“All four people were travelling in the same car. The driver of the HGV is currently assisting police with their enquiries. The road closure on the westbound carriageway has now been partially removed, with a single lane of traffic flowing from the Conwy Tunnel exiting at J17 Conwy Morfa off slip and then re-joining the carriageway on the J17 on slip. Investigations by the North Wales Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit carry are ongoing at the scene.”

Chief Inspector Trystan Bevan said: “I share my deepest condolences with the woman’s family at this incredibly difficult time, and my thoughts are with all the others involved in this collision. I am asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant dash-cam footage – to come forward as soon as possible.”

After the crash, Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, thanked motorists for their patience during today’s incident. He said in a statement in the afternoon: “A major incident has occurred on the A55 and the situation remains dynamic.

“Our thoughts are with all those involved. Significant delays are expected in the area, and emergency services along with our teams are working hard to manage the scene and ease congestion. Thank you for your patience while this incident continues and please check Traffic Wales for updates.”
