It was shut between Moorfield Street in Hollingworth and West Drive in neighbouring Tintwistle.
Diversions were put in place along local routes with motorists travelling between Manchester and Yorkshire advised to use other trans-Pennine routes.
Derbyshire Police spent several hours at the scene dealing with the aftermath and carrying out investigation work.
No further details about the collision have yet been released, with the force still to comment on the incident.
The road reopened shortly before 9pm.
