The Rapture is based on Liz Jensen’s 2009 novel of the same name, and the five-part series was filmed in Wales.

Bryony Kimmings and Rebecca Manley adapted the book, while Eva Sigurđardóttir took on directing duties.

In a synopsis, the BBC shared: “Set in a heatwave, with protestors on the streets, forensic psychologist Gabs Fox (Madeley) starts a new job at a high-security psychiatric hospital where she meets 17-year-old Bethany Krall (India Amarteifio).

“Bethany was convicted of murdering her mother but claims she is innocent.

“She is estranged from her father Leonard, who is the charismatic leader of an influential religious movement.

“Bethany tells Gabs that she has psychic powers and can predict the future – but what will it take for Gabs to believe her?

“And if Bethany didn’t kill her mother, then who did?”

Discussing what drew her to the project, Ruth Madeley shared: “When The Rapture first came to me, I fell in love with the character – her story, her grief, her flaws.

“Seeing a disabled lead is always really exciting and knowing I can play that well and be the right person for it is even more exciting.

“I love her flaws. I never want to play a character who’s too perfect.

“It’s not real.

“The book has been around for a while, but the way Bryony Kimmings and Rebecca Manley have written the script makes it feel really relevant to the world today.

“If I wasn’t in it, I would absolutely be all over this as a viewer.”

A driver has ploughed into a crowd of people near Berlin‘s Pride celebrations on Saturday evening, leaving several people injured, Berlin police said. 

The incident happened just hours after the event celebrating the LGBTQ+ community had begun, prompting police to call off the event in the German capital.  

Berlin Police said they, alongside emergency services, were responding to an incident in the city’s central Tiergarten Park, near the Brandenburg Gate.

‘Numerous’ people have been injured, including several with life-threatening injuries, the force’s spokesperson Florian Nath said. It is not clear how many are injured.

One person has been killed in the incident, Bild reported. Meanwhile, some continue to be treated, with some being resuscitated at the scene, Mr Nath said. 

A manhunt has since been launched for the suspect as the force deployed ‘a lot of police’ to the scene. It is not yet clear if there is one or several suspects.

The motorist, who is said to have struck down several people on the Ahornsteig in the park shortly before 10pm (local time), was driving a white vehicle.

‘We are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects,’ a police officer said on a short video released on the Berlin police account on X.

Firefighters, ambulances, as well as other emergency services were at the park attending to victims. 

It comes as hundreds of thousands of people arrived in the capital city to celebrate at Berlin’s Pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day.

The pride event, which is one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, was called off at around 10:15 pm (local time) amid celebrations. 

People were urged to go home and to avoid taking the route through the Tiergarten park.

Before the incident, people had celebrated peacefully, marching through the city, dancing, and cheering as around 80 floats participated in the parade.

ITV has issued an apology after accidentally airing an unedited clip of Gordon Ramsay swearing on a repeat of Food Stars USA more than 12 hours before the watershed. The TV chef, 59, is well known for his use of profanity but in an edition that was broadcast at 8:25am on ITV2 in May, a blunder with the subtitles saw that the bad language had not been edited out and appeared in text form on the screen.

The swearing had been removed from the audio of the programme and replaced with the typical bleep sound but the censoring had not made it as far as the closed captions, The Sun reports.

The channel claimed that the subtitles were created before the “the implementation of new checking processes,” which now includes “steps to ensure that any mismatch” between versions within the scheduling system is “apparent and corrected” ahead of broadcast.

According to the outlet, the mistake was found to be “a clear breach” of Ofcom guidelines, which strictly prohibits the airing of swearing before 9pm. Viewers with the subtitles on would have realised that heavy use of the F-word from Gordon, and the Ofcom had to take into account that ITV2 did not apologise after the programme has finished.

A ruling from the broadcast read: “In this case, the broadcast of the words at 08:25 was a clear example of the most offensive language being broadcast before the watershed.

“This was a pre-recorded programme, which ITV2 would have had the opportunity to check prior to broadcast, and that it included two instances of the most offensive language before the watershed.

“Further, we considered there was no on-air apology made by ITV2 following the broadcast. Ofcom took into account the steps that the Licensee said it had taken since being notified of the incident to prevent future recurrence.

“However, in Ofcom‘s view, these steps would not have impacted on the offence caused to viewers as a result of this particular broadcast.”

Earlier this year, This Morning’s Ben Shephard had to issue an apology after Gordon swore during a live cooking segment while bickering with his daughter Tilly on the set of the ITV Daytime show.

The chef had been talking about his daughter Holly’s wedding to Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty and arguing with his eldest Tilly on This Morning when he knocked over a container of soy sauce.

“Oh s**t,” he said, while Ben quickly jumped in: “Just in case that spilled into the classic Ramsay work, apologies. We are live. I’m just pre-empting a strike.” Gordon argued back: “I said shoot! Ben – come on, Ben!”

For many, the perfect garden centre offers far more than plants alone, but a sense of community. Whether meeting friends over coffee, browsing for gifts or attending an event, readers say it is the whole experience that keeps them coming back.

Jay, 48, from the West Midlands, perfectly sums up this sentiment, as he “always feels happy and relaxed” after visiting his favourite garden centre, Dobbies.

“It is a nice and peaceful place to visit,” he says. “There are many lovely plants, flowers and garden items to look at. I enjoy walking around, getting ideas for the garden and seeing colourful seasonal flowers.”

It’s not just for shopping, Jay adds: “It is a place where you can spend a quiet afternoon, have a cup of tea and enjoy time with family.”

Speaking of tea, reader Mike, 79, from the North East, says Heighley Gate Garden Centre near Morpeth, Northumberland, has been his “go-to” for garden products, having seen it develop over the last 50 years. Most notably, “it provided the space and the surface for [his] wife when she was recovering from her knee replacement operations”.

“We are usually there at least once per week for refreshments,” he adds.

Set in the north of Northumberland National Park near Ingram, the stunning waterfall drops 18 metres down a rock face into a plunge pool that the National Park says is around 16ft deep and 6ft wide, a great spot for a dip if the weather holds out.

It is also inside the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, which adds to the sense that this is a proper middle-of-nowhere escape rather than a polished visitor attraction.

Why people go

Part of the appeal is that Linhope Spout gives you a big payoff without a huge hike.

Northumberland National Park rates the walk as moderate, puts it at 3 miles (4.8km) there and back, and says most people should allow around two hours.

The route follows a mix of road, stone track and grassy paths, with some steeper ground on the final approach to the burn and waterfall.

That makes it manageable for plenty of casual walkers, but it still feels adventurous enough to earn the view at the end.

What the walk is like

The official route starts near Hartside Farm, then heads along the valley road towards Linhope before picking up a clear stone track beside a plantation.

From there, fingerposts direct walkers onto a grassy track that zig-zags down the hillside to Linhope Burn and the waterfall itself.

Along the way, the National Park highlights views towards Cunyan Crags, Dunmoor Hill, Shill Moor, Great Standrop and Hedgehope Hill, plus the chance of spotting red squirrels, or signs of them.

At the end, the waterfall lands in a dark plunge pool in a wooded ravine, with the glade an ideal spot for picnics.

Parking and facilities

For the shortest walk, Northumberland National Park says drivers should park on the grass verge just before Hartside Farm, keeping gates and access clear.

The walk start point is 5.5 miles west of the A697, reached by turning off at the junction signed Ingram about a mile north of Powburn and following the valley road past the National Park Centre and Bulby’s Wood car park.

There are no facilities at the waterfall itself, but the National Park lists toilets at Bulby’s Wood car park and the National Park Centre in Ingram.

Powburn and Wooler are closest for local services, which is useful if you want to turn the walk into more of a half-day trip.

A cheeky pub stop

For a post-walk pub option, a good choice is The Plough Inn in Powburn.

The family-run pub serves home-cooked dishes including fresh trout and game pie.

Another nearby stop is The Poacher’s Rest at Hedgeley Services, just north of Powburn on the A697, which serves food and drink all day and sits alongside a petrol station and farm shop/butchers.

Things to know before you go

The terrain includes road, stone track, grassy paths and some steep ground, so decent footwear is the safer bet even on a dry day.

The National Park also notes that part of the route uses permissive footpaths and open access land, and asks visitors to keep dogs on leads and follow the paths.

This is not a place with ticket booths, cafes or big car parks, which is part of the charm.

Among those taking their places for the day are Lynne, David, Noelle, Stephen, a family from Swansea and Caerphilly.

It is Lynne and David’s first air show, while Noelle and Stephen attend every year.

They said that they arrived promptly at 10.30am to get a good spot.

They plan to take plenty of pictures and film the displays.

Stephen said: “Every year it’s a great time, they throw a good show and it’s free.”

Berlin’s annual LGBTQ+ pride parade was called off on Saturday, just hours after the celebrations had begun.

Police in the German capital confirmed the decision, stating it was due to several people sustaining injuries after a car drove into the crowd.

Authorities used a post on X to urge all attendees to immediately leave the event – known locally as Christopher Street Day- premises.

A short while later, police clarified that a vehicle had entered Tiergarten park, situated near the planned route of the pride march, striking multiple individuals.

“We are searching intensively for suspects,” police said.

“We are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects,” a police officer said on a short video released on the Berlin police account on X.

While the precise number of those injured was not disclosed, nor the exact count of officers deployed, police confirmed a “definitely a lot of police” presence at the scene.

Hundreds of thousands had converged on Berlin for the parade, which stands as one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations.

Adam Ramsay-Peaty will be the headline act in tonight’s 100m breaststroke final but keep an eye on Filip Nowacki from Jersey, who could give him a run for his money. 

A double world junior champion, 18-year-old Nowacki has long been identified as Ramsay-Peaty’s successor. He finished just 0.33 seconds behind Ramsay-Peaty in yesterday’s semi-final after chasing hard on his second 50m split.

“I’ve definitely got a bit of a scrap in me,” said Nowacki, who is bidding to end Jersey’s 36-year medal drought at a Commonwealth Games. “To be racing one of the best in the world – arguably the greatest breaststroker of all time – is very special to me. I’m confident, my training’s been progressing really well.” 

Already a world junior 100m and 200m breaststroke champion, Nowacki has long looked up to Ramsay-Peaty. “He’s a true role model in the sport,” he said. “Even in the call room before, he’s just so professional and so zoned in. Being one of the youngsters coming through, it’s very important to look up to people like that. Those senior athletes know what they’re doing. They’ve been in that position many times before and I think it’s important to keep an eye on what he does.”

One of Hartlepool’s biggest festive family traditions, Cinderella, will light up the stage at the Town Hall Theatre from Thursday, December 10 to Sunday, December 27.

Returning to the stage are Hartlepool’s unforgettable dame Gary Martin Davis and Anthony Turner, who are teaming up as the wickedly funny Ugly Sisters.

Phil Reid is also back by popular demand as the lovable and hilarious Buttons, bringing his trademark comedy, warmth and hilarity to the stage.

This year marks the panto debut of Hartlepool’s own Hollie Boynton-Briggs as Cinderella.

High-energy troupe Ruff Diamond will again get the audience clapping, singing, and dancing along.

Councillor Rob Darby, chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Housing, Growth and Communities Committee, said: “Christmas in Hartlepool wouldn’t be complete without a family trip to the pantomime, and Cinderella is shaping up to be our most enchanting show yet.

“With a fantastic cast, stunning production values and plenty of festive fun, there really is something for everyone.

“We can’t wait to welcome audiences to the Town Hall Theatre and create some unforgettable Christmas memories.”

Tickets are expected to be in high demand, with thousands of families expected to attend the festive spectacular across the run, as they do each year.

Tickets start at £14 for children and £16 for adults, plus a £1.50 booking fee per ticket, which  are available from the Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre Box Office in Hartlepool Art Gallery in Church Square.

Booking fees are capped at £7.50 for five or more tickets purchased together.
