York – firefighters attend two fires ‘deliberately started’

Yesterday evening (Sunday, August 9), crews in Acomb were called to Fieldside Place, off Lawrence Street, and Clifton Backies in Water Lane.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said around 6.40pm, firefighters went to the scene of a small fire in Fieldside Place “consisting of paper and wood” and used a knapsack sprayer to put the fire out.

Then, at 8.51pm Acomb crews were mobilised to a report of a fire in the open in Clifton Backies.

The spokesperson said: “After inspection crews confirmed this was two separate areas of fire both measuring approximately five square metres.

“Crews extinguished using knapsack sprayers and beaters.”

The cause of each fire is thought to have been deliberate, the service spokesperson said.
