York inner ring road fully reopens after storm damage

The road has reopened at the Fishergate Gyratory, close to the junction of Fishergate with Paragon Street, which had been closed since Sunday night (August 30).

Traffic had been diverted along Piccadilly and Walmgate during the closure, resulting in lengthy delays as traffic built in the area on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Motorists described “chaotic” scenes in the Walmgate area during the work with one Press reader saying: “Lots of people were getting impatient and honking their horns.”

City of York Council thanked residents for their “patience while a solution was put in place”.

“We know it’s been a tough few days on the network with delays across the city,” a council spokesperson said.

They said the road reopened after the new surface at Fishergate set.

The spokesperson added that the council cleared the drains and gulleys in Fishergate in July as part of its Highways Maintenance Programme, “and we’ll continue to work with Yorkshire Water to monitor the situation”.

Yorkshire Water said it understood the heavy rain on Sunday night “caused water to push through gaps under a manhole cover and frame, lifting the road surface”.

First Bus said its number seven and 10 services both faced delays during the closure.
