Don’t Treat Honest Taxpayers Like Tax Evader: Finance Minister nirmala sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has asked Income Tax officers across India to make the tax system more taxpayer-friendly. Speaking at the inauguration of the new Income Tax headquarters, Aayakar Sindhu, in Mumbai, she said honest taxpayers should not be made to run from one office to another for their work.
She urged officers to distinguish between genuine mistakes and deliberate tax evasion. Taxpayers who make an honest error should not be treated like tax evaders, while those who intentionally evade taxes should face strict action.
The Finance Minister also said people should feel that the Income Tax Department works for their benefit. She asked officers to understand taxpayers’ problems, enforce the law fairly, and treat people with empathy, courtesy and respect.
The message was delivered from Mumbai to Income Tax officers across the country, with the focus on making tax administration more efficient, transparent and citizen-friendly.
