Elon Musk: Money Won’t Matter in 2036
Elon Musk predicts that money won’t matter in 2036—but only if AI and robots create abundance on a scale beyond human consumption.
Zanny Minton Beddoes asks how Musk’s companies make money when shareholders still expect returns. Musk answers by asking what money is for: goods and services such as food, housing, transport and entertainment. If AI and robots can provide more of those things than any person could possibly consume, he argues, what would money still be needed for?
This is Musk’s conditional forecast, not a demonstrated economic result or an established 2036 timetable. The excerpt does not show that scarcity, prices, ownership, distribution, energy, land or access would disappear.
