How do women choose financial independence over marriage?

Did I want to marry rich, become a hot housewife, and have two kids?

At one point, yes.

But what I have been thinking about is this: why are so many women taught to build themselves around being chosen?

For a lot of Indian women, marriage, money, beauty, ambition, and success all become tied to approval. You are either expected to be desirable enough for a powerful man to choose you, or successful enough to prove you never needed one.

But both versions can still become performances.

I had the lifestyle. I had the apartment. I had the kind of life that looked perfect from the outside.

And still, something in me knew I had to ask: is this actually mine?

Somewhere along the way, I stopped waiting for security to come through someone else.

I built it for myself.
