Matt Hougan believes the next major crypto bull market could be driven by something far bigger than retail speculation. According to the Bitwise Chief Investment Officer, the global financial system is steadily moving on-chain, and that shift could eventually bring tens of trillions of dollars into blockchain-based markets.

In this video, Matt Hougan explains why he believes as much as $100 trillion in traditional financial assets could move on-chain over the next several years. Major financial institutions are already building around stablecoins, tokenization, blockchain settlement, and digital asset infrastructure, suggesting that the transformation is no longer theoretical.

Hougan argues that moving assets on-chain could completely change how financial markets operate. Traditional stock markets are limited by trading hours and settlement delays. Blockchain networks can operate 24/7, settle transactions faster, and dramatically reduce friction.

His comparison is simple. Email did not merely double the number of messages people sent compared with physical letters. Communication exploded because it became instant and inexpensive. Hougan believes finance could experience a similar transformation.

As stocks, bonds, funds, commodities, and other assets become tokenized, transaction activity could increase 10x, 20x, or even 30x. Once artificial intelligence agents and micropayments are added to the system, Hougan believes transaction volumes could eventually become hundreds or even thousands of times larger than today.
