Financial literacy is not just about knowing what a credit score is or how interest works. It shows up in everyday decisions: whether people budget, save for emergencies, compare credit cards, avoid spending more than they earn, and understand the long-term cost of debt.

WalletHub ranked all 50 states and DC using 17 metrics across three main areas:

📊 WalletLiteracy Test Score — how residents performed on WalletHub’s financial literacy test.

💳 Financial Planning & Habits — including credit scores, rainy-day funds, budgeting, spending behavior, use of banking services, and credit card habits.

🎓 Financial Knowledge & Education — including high-school financial literacy requirements, graduation rates, personal finance coursework, and education levels.

Minnesota ranked first overall. The state stands out for having personal finance education built into its K-12 curriculum, the highest median credit score in the country, and one of the highest shares of adults with enough emergency savings to cover at least three months of expenses.

Colorado and Wisconsin followed, both helped by strong education indicators and responsible financial behavior among residents.

At the bottom of the ranking, Arkansas came in last, followed by South Dakota, Oklahoma, Alaska, and Louisiana. These states scored lower across the broader mix of financial knowledge, education, and planning habits.

One important takeaway: financial literacy is not just a high-income-state story. Having more money can make financial life easier, but it does not automatically mean people are better at budgeting, saving, using credit responsibly, or preparing for emergencies.
