President Donald Trump said Tuesday he doesn’t factor how Americans feel about their financial situation as he works to end the conflict in Iran.

“Not even a little bit,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House as he departed for China.

“The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran: They can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation,” he said.

“I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all that is. That’s the only thing that motivates me,” the president added.

Trump’s comments came as new Labor Department data showed Americans facing another sharp rise in consumer prices last month, fueled in part by higher gasoline costs tied to the war with Iran.

The Labor Department’s consumer price index rose 3.8% from April 2025, the biggest jump in three years.

Pressed about the financial strain Americans are facing, Trump argued the public overwhelmingly agrees with his position that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.

“Every American understands,” Trump insisted. “They understand that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

Prices are rising at a time when Americans are already frustrated by the high cost of living. Affordability is likely to be a key issue when voters go to the polls Nov. 3 to determine whether President Donald Trump’s Republican Party maintains control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
