Donald Trump Jokes About Renaming Strait Of Hormuz After Himself

Donald Trump has been mocked online after suggesting the Strait of Hormuz in Iran should be renamed after himself.

The US president made the bizarre proposal during as rambling, two-hour address to the Republican Party’s so-called “midterm convention” in Dallas.

“I think we should call the Hormuz Strait the Trump Strait,” he said. “I should get something out of it. The Trump Strait.”

As his supporters applauded, Trump added: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll have an announcement. We’ll call it the Trump Strait, and I’m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that.”

The Strait, which used to help transport one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies, has been effectively closed by Iran since the war began with a wave of American and Israeli attacks at the end of February.

At the time, Trump said the conflict would only last up to six weeks, but there remains no end in sight.

The president has repeatedly claimed the Strait is either open or controlled by the US, but it remains all-but closed to international shipping, pushing up the global price of oil.

Trump’s suggestion that it should not be called after himself triggered an angry backlash on social media.

Elsewhere in his speech, Trump also claimed that if the Republicans win November’s midterm elections, every American will be sent a cheque for $5,000.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000, it will be called the Trump dividend,” he said.
