Gordon Brown Warns Donald Trump Facing Midterm Wake Up Call

Gordon Brown has warned Donald Trump that he no longer has the support of the American people.

The former prime minister, who resigned after Labour lost the 2010 general election, said the US president will face a “wake-up call” in November’s midterm elections in the US.

A defeat for the Republicans would be a huge blow for the president and make it virtually impossible for him to pass legislation in his final two years in office.

Speaking to the Rest Is Money podcast, Brown said voters in America are turning against Trump over his failure to tackle the rising cost of living.

He said: “I would say to [Trump] American public opinion is not with you anymore.”

Brown said a poll of 100,000 voters around the world for a new book he has written showed that “American people want to co-operate” with other nations, unlike the increasingly-isolationist Trump.

The former PM added: “In America, the Trump factor is still incredibly important, even though on affordability issues, he’s now losing support. So it’s the two together, it’s economic decline and civic decline.”

Around one in six Trump voters told pollsters from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst they would not vote for again while his overall approval rating has also declined to around 32%.

Trump’s decision to initiate a war against Iran in February – a move which continues to weigh on the global economy – remains deeply unpopular.

The president has also spent a lot of time picking fights with allies, as seen in his ongoing trade war with Canada, rather than on domestic affairs.

He has not focused on bringing down cost of living even though he campaigned on a promise to put “America First”.

Trump’s attempts to disrupt the world order is putting off his supporters, according to the ex-prime minister.

“They [Americans] want America to be engaged in persuasion and not coercion,” Brown said.

“America, which used to act multilaterally in a unipolar world, has got to be persuaded to act multilaterally in a multi-polar world. And the public of America are with us on this.”

He continued: “And I think the midterm elections may be a wake-up call that the Trump view of the world that it’s America first and only is something that is not actually held by the American people.

“And I would probably try and tell him that.”
