3 Reasons why WWE moved Finn Balor to SmackDown

Finn Balor has remained one of WWE’s most reliable performers. He has consistently delivered whenever he was given an opportunity. However, fans were surprised when it was officially announced that Balor had been moved to SmackDown.

The move was revealed on the international broadcast of Monday Night RAW by Byron Saxton during a commercial break. Hence, The Prince’s transfer may have less to do with a fresh start and more to do with creative necessity.

That said, in this article, we look at three reasons why WWE decided to move Finn Balor to SmackDown.

#3. WWE quietly scrapped his feud with Dominik Mysterio

Perhaps one of the biggest clues that Finn Balor’s days on RAW were numbered came from the way WWE handled his rivalry with Dominik Mysterio.

After being betrayed and kicked out of The Judgment Day earlier this year, Balor appeared destined for a lengthy revenge storyline against Dominik, JD McDonagh, Liv Morgan, and the rest of the faction. WWE heavily teased the feud throughout March and April, with multiple attacks and confrontations taking place on RAW.

The Judgment Day’s assault on The Prince seemed like the beginning of a major singles program that could have carried both men through the summer. Instead, the rivalry slowly lost momentum.

Finn Balor did manage to score some victories and remained involved in Judgment Day-related segments. However, the storyline never truly evolved into the major feud many expected. WWE repeatedly shifted focus toward other stories. Dominik even suggested that the creative team had struggled to find meaningful direction for him despite his popularity.

The company may have ultimately decided that keeping both stars on the same brand was no longer necessary. Rather than forcing a feud that had already cooled off, Triple H and Co. seemingly chose to move Balor to SmackDown and allow both men to pursue different opportunities.

In many ways, this feels like WWE quietly closing the chapter on their rivalry without officially announcing that it was over. Fans were expecting a long-term personal feud. However, the creative team appears to have moved in another direction.

#2. SmackDown lacks star power compared to RAW

Another major reason behind the move could be SmackDown’s need for additional star power. Monday Night RAW currently features several of WWE’s biggest attractions.

The red brand has been built around names such as Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Seth Rollins, among others. It features multiple top championship storylines. Even outside the title picture, the show remains stacked with established names and rising stars.

Meanwhile, SmackDown has occasionally felt thinner in comparison. Although the blue brand still boasts major names, WWE may believe that Finn Balor can help strengthen the roster heading into the summer season. Despite not being consistently booked in the world title picture, he remains one of the most recognizable and respected performers in the company. His experience, credibility, and ability to work with virtually anyone make him an ideal addition.

Also, the move creates several fresh matchups that WWE can immediately capitalize on. Balor has not been regularly featured against many of SmackDown’s top stars in recent years. Hence, the creative team now has numerous new directions available.

The global juggernaut has historically used roster moves to balance both shows. Hence, this transfer feels like another example of that strategy.

#1. WWE seemingly had no long-term plans for Finn Balor on RAW

The biggest reason behind Finn Balor’s move may simply be that WWE ran out of meaningful stories for him on RAW.

Over the last several months, Balor found himself drifting between programs without a clear destination. He remained popular with fans and continued producing quality matches, including impressive performances against top stars earlier this year. However, it seemingly became increasingly difficult to identify where his character fit into the bigger picture.

The breakup of The Judgment Day initially looked like it would give The Prince a major singles push. However, after the faction storyline cooled down, he was left searching for direction. Meanwhile, WWE continued investing heavily in other main-event programs and emerging stars.

A move to SmackDown would allow Finn Balor to refresh his character. Also, it would allow him to enter new rivalries and possibly re-establish himself as a major singles star. WWE has successfully revitalized careers through brand changes before. Hence, there is every reason to believe the company hopes for a similar outcome here.

At 44 years old, Balor still possesses elite in-ring ability. Also, he remains one of WWE’s most dependable performers. If the creative team can provide him with the right storyline on SmackDown, this move could ultimately prove to be one of the smartest roster decisions the company makes in 2026.

Rather than viewing the transfer as a demotion, fans should see it as a reset. WWE may not have had a clear path forward for Finn Balor on RAW. However, SmackDown seemingly offers the chance for a completely new beginning. Perhaps one final run near the top of the card.
