Arne Slot has been forced to respond to speculation around his future at Liverpool. More specifically, the Dutchman was directly asked about Xabi Alonso during his pre-match press conference before his team face Marseille on Wednesday.

Former Liverpool player Alonso is thought to be the favourite to take over at Anfield if Slot loses his job after a poor season so far. The Spaniard was dismissed by Real Madrid last week, but is still seen as a promising manager at the beginning of his journey to becoming a world-class coach.

However, no matter how loud the rumours and reports get about Slot’s position, it’s rare to see a manager directly asked about a specific replacement. That’s exactly what happened at Orange Velodrome on Tuesday night.

Not only was he asked about the rumours of Alonso being the next man in the Anfield dugout and whether he ‘feels pressure’, but the 47-year-old was also asked whether Alonso had been in touch with him.

At first, Slot went along with it and gave a joking reply, before labelling it ‘one of the weirdest questions’ he’d ever received. He replied:

“Yes he called me and said: ‘What do you think about the team because I am going to take over in six months, can you tell me a little bit more?’”

Or maybe earlier. Maybe he takes over tomorrow! No, no, no. This is one of the weirdest questions I ever got.”

Appearing to feel more baffled at the question as he went on, Slot added: “What is there to say? I have been working here for a little bit more than one and a half years and I really like my work over here.

“We won the league last season, struggled more in the league this season. That is also obvious, so yes what is there left to say?”

Slot: I Heard Anfield Boos vs Burnley

Slot is looking to get back to winning ways after a disappointing Premier League draw against relegation-threatened Burnley. The Reds were booed off by some portions of the Anfield faithful.

The former Feyenoord tactician addressed the discontent among some parts of the Merseyside fan base, saying: “The boos (from some fans after the 1-1 draw with Burnley)? Maybe I heard a few but it wasn’t as if it was a lot. But I also think it is completely normal that if you have a draw at home to Burnley, no one is happy about that.

“But I think the moment the people went home, when emotions calmed down, they probably thought in the one and a half years I have been at Liverpool we have never created so many chances against a low block as we did in that game.

“Maybe it was a little bit more positive than the result showed but we are in a results business I know that.”
