As LIV teeters, potential paths back to PGA Tour will be difficult

Brian Rolapp is nothing if not consistent and on message.

When the PGA Tour CEO opened the door for Brooks Koepka to come back from LIV Golf in January through the “Returning Member Program,” he made one thing clear.

“This is a one-time, defined window and does not set a precedent for future situations,” Rolapp said in the announcement that Koepka was returning. “Once the door closes, there is no promise that this path will be available again.”

That olive branch was offered to four players: Koepka, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith. Only Koepka grabbed it, and then the door closed.

That was when LIV still appeared to be going strong: before Patrick Reed exited to make his own way back to the PGA Tour, before the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund announced it would no longer fund LIV after 2026 and before players still calling that league home, most notably Rahm, reportedly started trying to find a way out. After LIV’s season — and potentially its era — ended on Sunday in Indianapolis with Rahm evading a question on his future and Tyrrell Hatton bolting for the airport, Rolapp was once again asked Tuesday ahead of the Tour Championship if Koepka’s side-door back to the PGA Tour might open again.

“No, currently there’s no current plans for Returning Member Program like you saw earlier this year,” Rolapp said.

For months, Rolapp has said the PGA Tour has no plan to reintegrate LIV players. There are no ongoing negotiations to create any sort of merger and Rolapp gets all his information about LIV’s future (or lack thereof) from the news. LIV 1.0 is over. If there is no LIV 2.0, plenty of players will be looking for a new home. Even if there is a LIV 2.0, many players might not want to be part of that new future. But Koepka wanted to return and was willing to show contrition and pay the price. Others rejected the offer and are now only hoping to get a similar deal since LIV’s future is in doubt. There’s little reason for Rolapp to use up valuable capital he has earned with his membership on extending a similar immunity deal to any potential new returnees.

On Tuesday in Atlanta, Rolapp unveiled the Tour’s new postseason format, which will begin in 2028. Whether players like Rahm, Hatton and others might be back and vying for the Tour’s season-long title remains unknown. But Rolapp once again stuck to the Tour’s company line: Rolapp will have an open mind when it comes to LIV players returning. He wants to do what’s best for the Tour, but there will be repercussions for any former Tour member who left for LIV and now wants to return.

“When it comes to LIV players or anyone else who wants to be on the Tour. One, the Tour is built on meritocracy. Every player, whether they’re already here or they’re trying to be here, they’re going to earn a place based on their performance and on their success. That’s a core principle of the sport, and it certainly is of the PGA Tour,” Rolapp said. “Two, the Tour is a membership organization. It has rules. Those rules exist for lots of reasons, for fair, competitive reasons. They exist so we can actually create the Tour as you know it. Rules matter. Three, rules only matter if they’re enforced. So accountability and discipline are essential to any organization, and certainly for the integrity of the Tour and for the game, especially in a game that prides itself on rules and integrity.

“Those are guiding principles for us. Rules matter. Again, I’ve been very public that I want to do what’s best for the PGA Tour, and that’s still my guiding principle. Whatever happens, those will be the guiding principles.”

Rolapp understands that players like Rahm and DeChambeau would benefit the Tour’s business. But he also knows that players who left for LIV burned a lot of bridges, and not all will be welcomed back like Koepka was in January. If any LIV players are seeking a life raft back to the Tour, Rolapp is willing to listen. But he needs to see that the players want to return for the right reasons, are legally able to do so and pay the appropriate price for their defections.

Koepka did that. Anyone else will have to do the same to find a path back.

“I don’t know the future of LIV,” Rolapp said. “It sounds like they’re working really hard to come up with the next iteration of it. We’ve been consistent. Anyone who’s interested in coming to the PGA Tour needs to demonstrate that they are relieved of their contractual commitments or any tail obligations they might have in that legacy model. Brooks certainly did that, and until then, we weren’t really able to consider anything seriously. I would say the same thing here.

“I think it’s unclear what we’re reacting to, but any player who is here needs to demonstrate that they’re completely free of any tail obligation for some time.”

As has been the case since Koepka returned, Rolapp has his focus on the Tour’s future. If anyone wants to be a part of that, he’s willing to listen. But the deal Koepka took is no longer available, and any potential road back will be paved with accountability — the kind acceptable to both Rolapp and his membership that came out on the winning side of golf’s civil conflict.
