Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was as emotional as he has ever been at a press conference on Monday.

While it might be a bad look to some, it’s a good sign for fans.

The Big 12 had a good week.

Oklahoma State’s victory over Oregon was a shocker, and the Conference avoided disaster when Texas Tech found a way to beat Oregon State. Utah did its part, too, with a blowout win over Arkansas.

At the same time, Kansas State crushed Washington State, Iowa State battled Iowa to the last play, and BYU kept its Playoff hopes alive with a win over Arizona.

Is it a sea change? No. But it’s a step in the right direction.

Week 3 features a massive showdown in the Conference when No. 13 Texas Tech hosts No. 22 Houston.

But my featured team is Kansas as the Jayhawks head to London to face Arizona State.

It’s not easy to win at a place like Kansas.

With no football tradition and no big-time donor, the Jayhawks are treading water in the expanded Big 12. But the school pumped money into a stadium renovation, signaling a long-term commitment to the football program.

Lance Leipold has been the head coach since 2021. He’s compiled a record of 28-36 with bowl appearances in his second and third seasons. The nine wins in 2023 were the most KU had since 2007.

Yet, despite the initial success, the program has stalled.

Kansas won five games last year and five games the year before. There’s been no bowl appearances since that 2023 season.

And nobody ever talks about Kansas Football.

Recruiting is dead. There are no star players.

How many people reading this can even name a single guy on their roster?

Surely, a team like that has no chance against Arizona State. The Sun Devils have more money and, frankly, a better coach.

Kenny Dillingham has energized the Phoenix metro and is a talented recruiter. Arizona State had a Top 25 transfer class and brought in a quarterback with experience starting in the SEC.

In ASU’s first year in the Big 12, they won the league and made the Playoff. In other words, Arizona State accomplished more in a single year than Kansas has accomplished since helping found the Big 12 in 1996.

Anything can happen in London. But it should be a full-on display of the “haves” and “have-nots” in the Big 12.

Give me the Sun Devils by at least 21 points.

A rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney remains as one of the most in-demand contests in the sport of boxing, and esteemed boxing analyst Teddy Atlas has offered his thoughts on the fight. 

‘King Ry’ got the better of Haney in an upset win back in April 2024 in a career-best triumph, only for that victory to then be taken away from him after he failed a drugs test during the aftermath, testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug Ostarine.

Since then, both Haney and Garcia have got their hands on world honours in the welterweight division, with Haney defeating Brian Norman for the WBO title and Garcia trumping Mario Barrios for the WBC marble – which he defended against Conor Benn on Saturday.

Speaking after Garcia’s latest demolition job on ‘The Fight with Teddy Atlas’, Atlas reflected on Haney’s display against Garcia, believing that he fought the wrong fight against his fellow Californian.

“He [Haney] is in a good place now, he is a good fighter, he is a sharpshooter when he boxes right. He didn’t box right against Garcia, he tried to go and get Ryan, that is not him, he is a guy that sets traps.

“He does what Garcia does tonight [against Benn], he sets traps, he is real accurate with his punches and he doesn’t waste anything. He is a consummate boxer, counter-puncher and he came out of character against Ryan – and he paid a price for it.”

Looking ahead to a future rematch between the pair, Atlas appreciated the way in which Haney has bounced back from that harrowing night against Garcia and admitted that a second meeting would make for ‘an interesting fight’.

“I like the way that Haney looks right now. Haney got himself through the mental cobwebs from the physical beating that he took [against Garcia], he got through it.”

“Now he is back to being Haney and Haney is a good fighter. I’m telling you, that would be an interesting fight.”

Whilst Haney is a champion fight fans are hoping ‘King Ry’ attempts to unify against, it seems as though WBA titleholder Teofimo Lopez could be the frontrunner to be Garcia’s next opponent.

England forward Princess Ademiluyi, who is of Nigerian descent, was consoled by Nigeria’s players and staff after the Falconets defeated the Young Lionesses 3-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

Ademiluyi started the match and was one of England’s biggest attacking threats, but Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma produced several important saves to deny her.

Nigeria took the lead in the eighth minute through Tosin Rafiu, who finished after breaking into the England penalty area.

Ademiluyi came close to an equaliser when she was played through by Vera Jones, but Uzoma made a crucial save to deny the England forward. She had another opportunity shortly afterwards, but the Nigerian goalkeeper again stood firm.

England were later awarded a penalty after a VAR review following a foul on Ademiluyi inside the box. However, Rachel Maltby’s spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Uzoma, who tipped the ball onto the crossbar.

Nigeria went into the break 1-0 ahead before Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei doubled the lead just two minutes into the second half with a powerful strike.

Mary Mamudu then sealed the victory in the 73rd minute after Akekoromowei won the ball and set her up to score Nigeria’s third goal.

The 3-0 victory sent Nigeria into the quarter-finals, while England’s World Cup campaign came to an end.

After the final whistle, members of the Nigerian team and staff went over to console Ademiluyi, creating a touching moment between the two teams.

Ademiluyi, who plays for Ipswich Town on loan from Gotham FC, had started all four of England’s matches at the tournament and had scored in their 5-1 win over Tanzania.

Nigeria will face the winner of the Poland and Colombia Round of 16 tie in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20.

Ferencvaros piled on the misery for Celtic with a 3-1 win in their Europa League opener at Parkhead.

Sunday’s bruising 3-0 Scottish League Cup defeat to Rangers had stunned Martin O’Neill’s side, who fell behind in the 20th minute when winger Bamidele Yusuf’s shot deflected off defender Liam Scales and into the net.

Midfielder Mika Baur swept in an equaliser in the 44th minute but before the half-time whistle blew, captain Kristoffer Zachariassen restored the Hungarian side’s lead.

Former Celtic forward Daniel Arzani fired in a stunning 20-yard drive in the 47th minute and Balazs Borbely’s side comfortably kept their lead intact.

O’Neill shuffled his side, with Viljami Sinisalo replacing on-loan goalkeeper Sam Johnstone who had looked shaky in Govan.

Record signing Kasper Hogh was dropped for striker Camilo Duran to move in from the wing, with wide men James Forrest and Haissem Hassan coming in along with midfielder Oliver Sorensen.

The visitors started sprightly, Yusuf brilliantly blocking a goal-bound shot from Forrest, and there were a couple of near misses from Duran and Forrest, again.

In the 18th minute, Zachariassen headed a Yusuf cross over the crossbar to hint at the danger to come and two minutes later, when the Nigerian decided to shoot from the edge of the Hoops penalty area, the ball was inadvertently redirected by Scales past the stranded Sinisalo.

Sinisalo dived smartly down to his right to push away a shot from Zachariassen for a 23rd-minute corner which came to nothing, and then a dangerous cross bounced off Mariano Gomez into the arms of the Celtic keeper.

In response, a drive from Celtic captain Callum McGregor was deflected wide for another Hoops corner which proved fruitless.

The home side did level when left-back Kieran Tierney drove into the box and cut the ball back for Baur, handed his first Germany call-up this week, to fire in from 12 yards and it looked like Celtic would have a chance to regroup at the break.

However, in added time, Yusuf dribbled all too easily into the Celtic penalty area and set up Zachariassen to flick the ball in from close range with defenders Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers in close attendance.

Hogh replaced Sorensen for the start of the second half to go with a front two but before the crowd settled, a Scales mistake ended with Yusuf sending Arzani clear down the left and after turning inside to the edge of the box, he fired high into the top corner.

Benjamin Nygren and Sebastian Tounekti replaced Forrest and Hassan, soon followed by Luke McCowan, as O’Neill tried another way into a match that was drifting.

Celtic pepped up and in the 69th minute Nygren came close with a curling shot and Tounekti had an effort parried away by keeper Adam Varga, whose mistake allowed Nygren a shot at an empty goal from 30 yards but he missed the target.

It is on to Sunday now for Celtic, who will try to win back the favour of their fed-up fans against their oldest rivals.
