Can Cleveland’s RTZ2 wedges handle real-world turf? We found out

Wedge testing is a finicky thing. A lot of great work can be done in a fitting bay, without question. But you can’t put a metric for how important getting a bunch of wedges out on a course to just mess around is. You’ve seen us test a bunch of clubs in the technical way, but what about the “feel” way?

Well… Jake and I grabbed an armful of the new Cleveland RTZ2 wedges, kicked off our shoes and walked nine holes at The Cradle at Pinehurst. Sand-dusted turf, short targets, Sunday bags — an honest place to see what a leading edge actually does under pressure. Here’s what we learned.

The old faithful: RTZ2 588 Grind

This was the head I wanted to see most. Roger Cleveland and I have worked together and talked wedge design for nearly 10 years, and you can see his hands all over this shape. It’s that clean, familiar look from address, but the sole has subtle relief tucked into the heel and toe. That tiny drop-off matters. On an uphill lie with the face popped open, I want to feel the heel skip across the turf rather than dig in and stop dead. Square it up, clip one clean and the grass barely moves. It sits right in that sweet spot: precise enough for low handicaps, but forgiving enough in a bunker to keep a 12-handicap out of trouble.

The scalpel: Low Grind (the T-Grind)

I pulled the 58 Low whenever the lie got hard and tight. The sole is narrow, the trailing edge is shaved down, and the leading edge sits dead flush against the ground. If you set a high-bounce club next to it, the difference is obvious — the leading edge on the bigger sole hovers, while this one hugs the dirt. Off firm turf, that low profile makes it easy to slip the face under the ball and catch grooves two through four for real check. You won’t get any bounce to rescue you if you drop your hands and hit it fat, but if you strike it cleanly, the control is exceptional.

The safety net: Full Grind

Not everyone picks the ball clean, and plenty of courses don’t play like baked-out sandhills. For anyone who attacks the ball steeply, takes a thick divot, or plays out of soft, lush fairway grass, the full grind is pure peace of mind. The wide, uninterrupted sole keeps the head moving forward through impact even if you enter the turf an inch behind the ball. If your biggest fear greenside is chunking a chip three feet in front of you, this is the sole you put in the bag.

Jake’s curveball: Adapt Grind

Jake went into this convinced he’d never look twice at a full-face, high-toe shape, but the Adapt changed his tune pretty fast. The sole has noticeable camber and roll. On one awkward sidehill lie where his feet were sitting four inches below the ball, the club glided through without snagging on the high side. Better yet, on aggressive open-face flop shots, impact naturally wanders toward the high toe. Instead of clanging off smooth chrome, the ball caught the extended grooves and checked up immediately.

Jake’s three-shot tun: Mid Grind

Jake had his eye on the Mid from hole 1, and he put it through three completely different shots from the same spot: a toe-down bump, a standard pitch, and a high, soft flop. Square to the ball, the leading edge sits low and clean like the low grind. Once you open the face, it brings just enough bounce into play to float through the grass without bouncing into the equator of the ball. It checked hard on every swing. It’s the safe, reliable baseline that’s going to fit the vast majority of players.

Walking The Cradle barefoot drove home the real point: shopping for wedges by loft alone is a mistake. If the grind doesn’t match how your club enters the turf — and the kind of dirt you play on — you’re fighting your equipment before you even start your swing. Cleveland dialed in the shapes; you just have to match the bottom of the club to your swing.
