Canada’s Rebecca Marino starts US Open qualifying with win
Rebecca Marino got Canada off to a good start at the final Grand Slam of the year.
Marino downed No. 30 qualifying seed Fiona Ferro of France 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round of qualifying for the US Open on Monday.
Singles players need to win three qualifying matches to be guaranteed a spot in the main draw in New York.
Marino, 35, is ranked 417th in the world. She lost to Turkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez in the opening round of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers earlier this month in Toronto.
Marino qualified for the US Open last year and lost to fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the first round.
Marino is one of five Canadians playing scheduled for singles qualifying on Monday. Bianca Andreescu, Kayla Cross, Carson Branstine and Alexis Galarneau also are scheduled to be on court.
Canada’s Katherine Sebov and Liam Draxl are scheduled for openers on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Finland’s Harri Heliövaara are scheduled to play a mixed-doubles qualifier on Monday.
