Rohit Sharma has shrugged off the speculations of his international retirement in an interview with the BCCI following India’s ODI series loss to England. The right-handed batter returned to form with a superb century, albeit in a losing cause. The Three Lions beat India by 27 runs to clinch the three-match series 2-1. Rohit had scored just 11 and 26 in the first two matches against England. Several media reports claimed that he might be dropped after the third ODI and added that the player might opt to retire at the conclusion of the match.

First, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia cleared the air on the issue. He said that Rohit is going to play for India even after the England series. If anyone still had doubts about it, the player himself has rubbished the claims of his international retirement.

Notably, Rohit has already called time on his T20I and Test careers and is active only in ODIs at the highest level.

The veteran cricketer said that the “outside noise” doesn’t bother him as it is something he has been used to since the start of his career.

“My job is with the bat. Come and play, represent my country. That’s what I have been told to do since I made my debut. That’s what I am going to do. Since I made my debut, the noise was there. Till the time I am going to be there, the noise will be there. It doesn’t matter to me. What matters is what I do on the field. I want to try and contribute to the success of the team. That’s all my focus is,” Rohit said.

“If there is no noise, there is no fun. My job is inside. Their job is outside. That’s how I look at it,” he added.

Rohit scored 138 off 110 balls in the third ODI against England at Lord’s, London. His innings was laced with 17 fours and five sixes.

Earlier, India captain Shubman Gill also refuted suggestions that Rohit plans to retire from international cricket after the third ODI against England at Lord’s.

After India’s 27-run loss to England, Gill was asked after whether he had heard anything about Rohit’s future and the skipper said there had been no talk of it within the team.

“He’s not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” Gill said.

In February this year, Rohit had revealed that he plans to play the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

“I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I’ve always looked upon. I’ve grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup, no IPL back then, and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So, there was desperation; there was so much weight for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy, so I’m going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it,” Rohit said during an ICC event.

EA Sports FC, which has been a fan favourite for decades, has been running a FIFA World Cup simulation since the 2010 edition. They predicted every tournament winner correctly between 2010 and 2022; just one week before the 2026 edition (June 6), they picked Spain to win it all.

After the final, fans took to X to express their disbelief as well as to make some ironic comments about the game. One fan wrote:

“Nahhhhh I forgot about this, wtaf. HOW DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS.”

Formerly known as FIFA during their contract with football’s global governing body, the gameplay has long been a source of criticism for EA Sports FC. Referencing that, one supporter wrote:

“If only fifa gameplay was as good as your predictions.”

Another supporter remarked:

“5 in a row in insane, 20 years worth of winners.”

Spain have become the first team to hold the UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup titles at the same time on two different occasions. While West Germany (World Cup 1974, EURO 1976) and France (World Cup 1998, EURO 2000) have done it once, the Iberian nation has done it twice (EURO 2008, World Cup 2010, EURO 2012; EURO 2024, World Cup 2026).

After scoring the only goal in the final against Argentina, Spain forward Ferran Torres claimed that his side were ‘destined’ to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Barcelona man received a lot of backlash for his inconsistent performances through the tournament. However, he stepped up when it mattered most, lashing Nico Williams’ cushioned header into the net deep in extra time (106′) to secure his nation’s second World Cup title.

After the game, an emotional Torres said (via ESPN):

“I think in the end the goal came from 47 million (Spanish) people, not just those of us that are here. Today destiny was written, it was made for us to win. We’re far from our people today but we tried to be as close as possible to them… I’ve been criticized throughout the whole tournament but, as I said before, destiny was written.”

Every FIFA World Cup winner in history has now won it on multiple occasions besides one – England, whose only triumph came in 1966.
